Do you feel that a family holiday is financially priceless? You don’t have to go bankrupt to have a great family vacation, just use these tips to save money on your next vacation.
Wherever you go, with a little planning you should be able to make this holiday a reality!
10 Travel budget Tips
1. Travel in low season.
One of the easiest ways to save money is to travel out of season.
Do you want to go to the beach? We have to go after Labor Day when the kids go back to school.
Fancy a family trip to the mountains? Go there in spring or summer.
The family would like to go on holiday to Europe? Departure is possible at any time, except during the summer months!
You will save at least 10 to 30% if you book a family holiday home in low season!
2. Consider a VRBO if you travel with a large family.
If you plan to spend a week or more on a family holiday, why stay in a small hotel room when you can get a fully-fledged apartment or town house?
With many rental companies you can get a good deal if you book for a week or if you travel outside office hours. Hotels usually have a fixed price, with little room to haggle.
Not only can you save money on long-term accommodation, but you can also do so if you know how to cook instead of going outside.
Eating out can really be the trick. If you cook at least one meal a day, you can save between 25 and 50 dollars!
Take a look at the VRBO seats and you’ll see the savings I’m talking about.
3. Buying a book for entertainment
Buying an entertainment book for the city you’re going to for your family vacation is a great way to save money.
These booklets contain great coupons for local restaurants, shops and entertainment.
Entertainment books are cheap, and the later you buy them, the cheaper they are!
It’ll probably pay for itself in one go!
4. Buying a CityPass
If you travel to the big city, a City Pass gives you free access to many local museums and tourist attractions (such as aquariums and parks).
Some even take you on public transport for free.
Buying a CityPass is one of the most important ways to travel with your family on a limited budget!
5. Brochures can be picked up at the hotel or at the reception.
One of my favourite tips for low-cost travel is to pick up brochures at the local reception or in the hotel lobby.
There are often savings papers in it! You can also call the hotel concierge if you have one.
Hotels often work with local restaurants and attractions to offer discount vouchers, and the concierge can point you to offers you may not otherwise know about.
6. When booking a hotel, search for a hotel that offers free breakfast.
Breakfast for a family of 4 can easily reach $30. Feeding your family on vacation is one of the biggest budget killers.
If you can win a free breakfast, the cost of the breakfast for each day of your holiday will be waived!
7. See if you can get discounts on hotels and attractions through the AAA or your credit card company.
If you have one, bring your AAA card and ask if they offer a discount. You can also contact the AAA office if you want to buy tickets for the attraction.
Don’t forget your student or military card, because in some places you also get a discount.
These small discounts can translate into large savings.
9. Do your research on sites like Expedia.
It’s a huge budget for family holidays! Websites like Expedia can help you find the best deals.
What I like about Expedia is that you can easily search on different dates, and when you’re looking for a flight, you can go through all the different airlines that serve your destination.
10. Rely on public transport.
One of the cheapest ways to cross the city is to use your own transport systems.
Although it’s easy to call Uber, you’ll end up spending a lot more than when you take the local bus or train.
If you travel on a limited budget, you sometimes have to think outside the box to save money. We hope you’ll find our list of tips for low-budget travel useful!
