Bozeman is located in southwest Montana in the Rocky Mountains. The city is beautiful in summer and winter. Perhaps not surprisingly, Bozeman is the scene of many outdoor adventures and culturally rich events. There is something for everyone in town.

1. the rock museum

The Rocky Mountain Museum is an amazing, internationally recognized museum of research and history. It is best known for its vast collection of dinosaur fossils, including even a complete skeleton of a T. rex! The museum presents changing exhibits from around the world and the region.

The museum offers local and natural history exhibits, planetarium shows, educational lectures, programs and camps, charity events and a museum store. On our first visit to Bozeman in 2011, we spent half a day exploring this museum.

When we were there, there was a living history room at a nearby pioneer farm. We visited the farm, watched them cook and eat, and learned about their lives.

When we returned in 2015, we rushed to the museum, but unfortunately we couldn’t spend enough time there. We rushed even more when we passed through Bozeman on our way to Alaska in 2019. But we will be back!

2. In downtown Bozeman

3. Gallatin Museum of History

The Gallatin History Museum aims to preserve, promote and publicize the history of the Bozeman area. The museum offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into the region’s past. Permanent exhibits include prison cells and the gallows, the Big Horn rifle, the Pioneer Salvation Cabin, and others on agriculture, music, women, and prison history.

The museum’s opening hours vary from day to day. The museum is closed on Sundays and Mondays. Admission varies according to age group.

4. the Montana Science Center

The Montana Science Center was founded in 2001 as a local children’s museum and grew into the center it is today. The museum offers a variety of hands-on exhibits, camps and other educational programs. Their mission is to provide STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) learning experiences for children.

Admission is $9 for children 2 years and older and free for members. Opening hours vary.

5th Montana Grizzly Bear Meeting

Your trip to Montana cannot be complete without an encounter with a grizzly bear. Montana Grizzly Bear Encounter is a shelter and rescue center for grizzly bears that was established in 2004. At the sanctuary, the bears have a vast area where they can roam and live their lives. As a guest, you can experience these bears up close and learn more about these incredible animals.

6th American Museum of Computer Science and Robotics

The American Museum of Computers and Robotics aims to inspire people of all ages to explore the past and imagine the future of the information age. The museum features interesting exhibits with revolutionary stories. The exhibits cover more than 4,000 years of computer history and innovation. It is a small museum that we visited briefly.

The museum is closed on Mondays and certain holidays, so please check the website before visiting. Admission to the museum is free for children up to age 9 and varies according to other age groups.

7. Hiking in the Gallatin Canyon area

There are many hiking trails around Gallatin Canyon, ranging from easy to difficult. Find a route that fits your personal needs and preferences.

Palisade Falls is a 1.2-mile circular hike south of Bozeman. Enjoy the beautiful views along the trail, including a huge cataract falling 80 feet from a vertical stone wall. This is a relatively easy hike that takes about 30 minutes. We hiked this trail and arrived at the waterfall, so we can recommend it without reservation.

Hiking Palisade Falls

The Lava Lake Trail (Cascade Creek) is a 5.5-mile round trip hike with a beautiful lake along the way. The total elevation gain is 1,620 feet and is considered a moderately challenging trail.

The Drinking Mountain Horse Trail is a 2.2-mile round trip that is considered easy to moderate. The duration of the hike is approximately 1 hour. At the top of the trail, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Bridger Mountain Range and the Gallatin Valley.

The Story Hills Trail is a 3-mile round trip hike that is considered an easy route. The loop will take 1.5 to 2 hours. You will enjoy the views of the city and the valley.

Tip: If you are in the area and visiting Yellowstone, try taking Gallatin Road, also known as US Highway 191, to West Yellowstone. It’s a fantastically scenic drive!
