American Airlines is changing their first class menu options to be more inclusive of vegan and vegetarian diets. In the process, they are adding a wider variety of dishes that people can enjoy on board. This review will explore how American’s new flagship diner fares as an option for those interested in healthy meals while eating out the window during flights
The “jfk flagship first dining menu” is the newest addition to American Airlines First Dining. They are located in Terminal 4 at JFK Airport, and offer a wide range of options for travelers.
When you go inside American Airlines Flagship First Dining JFK, you’ll forget you’re in an airline lounge for a minute. Except for the floor-to-ceiling glass views of the tarmac, you’d forget you’re at an airport. The atmosphere is calm. The service is outstanding. They’re also offering meals that you’d expect to find at a fine restaurant.
I reviewed/a> American Airlines Flagship First Dining JFK shortly after it opened in 2017. It’s been re-opened for a few months, and the food and service are even better than they were when it opened. It’s the best airport dining in the United States, and the experience is up there with the best in the world.
There are no spa treatments, the design isn’t as spectacular as Qatar’s al Safwa lounge in Doha, and you won’t be taken across the tarmac to your plane (unless you’re a fortunate Concierge Key member connecting). But simply having a discussion about how American Airlines’ first-class ground experience compares to Air France in Paris, Lufthansa in Frankfurt, or Cathay Pacific in Hong Kong is a remarkable achievement.
I had missed the media previews for the re-openings of a few of Flagship lounges and first dining rooms, but American Airlines offered me to attend one while I was going through one of the airports with one.
New York JFK, Miami, and Dallas – Fort Worth all have Flagship First Dining locations. It has not reopened at LAX, where American Airlines’ long-haul service has a bleak future. Flagship Dining is available within Flagship lounges, while it is not available at the soon-to-reopen Chicago Flagship lounge (the room was planned for it, but Chicago doesn’t have Flagship First Class flights).

On one side of the dining area, there are booths (with electricity) and tables along the windowline.
There’s also a separate bar with bar seating that looks out over the airport activities.
The view from this vantage point is breathtaking.
Even if you don’t have time for a meal, I strongly advise you to use this area as an eligible first-class passenger. Simply said, it’s more relaxing than the business lounge. If you prefer, sit in the bar area or at the bar itself. Alternatively, you may only eat an appetizer or dessert. Sit and work while gazing at the plane. There is no better area in the airport to wait.
The JFK Preflight Dining Experience with American Airlines’ Flagship First Dining
I was greeted warmly and given a booth or a window seat in the dining area. I knew I wanted to taste a variety of meals, which would need a large amount of table space. I requested both, which would allow me to catch up on work.
They took note of the two available booths and asked which one I liked. They took away the second place setting after I picked one and sat down.
Then I took a look at the menu for both drinks and meals.
I started out by ordering a glass of Laurent Perrier Grand Siecle champagne. Krug was served at Flagship First Dining before to the epidemic. This bottle is about the same price as the last one and drinks just as good.
I ordered two appetizers: oyster fritters and tuna tartare. But first, an amuse bouche was delivered to me, and I was asked whether I wanted to taste the corn bread. I consented. And when I indicated that I’d be photographing the meal so that I could write about it, the lady who was assisting me advised that I get another dish, which she said was the bacon and blue cheese salad. I consented.
The salad was served first, and I only ate about a third of it.
The oyster fritters are a little meal with just three bites, but they are all delicious. In fact, it stood out among the tuna.
The tuna was tasty and well-prepared, but I was most interested in seeing how it would be presented. I wasn’t yet full since it was a little offering, and I had just eaten the tuna and left the cucumbers (I skipped lunch).
I ordered two meals for the’main event.’ I’d tasted the duck previously, and it’d been on and off the menu for years. I’ve heard wonderful things about both the lamb chops and the shawarma, but I’m not going to go out of my way to try either. So I went with the filet and the burger (two beef dishes, but very different).
I compared the American Airlines Flagship burger to the Polaris burger served in United’s exclusive business class lounges in 2018. The Flagship burger triumphed, and the burger at JFK in New York was superior than those at LAX and Miami at the time. I can’t say if this is still true four years later, but the JFK burger surely delivered.
But, to see what would have occurred if I had used the customization option to request extra crispy fries, I probably should have done so. That didn’t occur to me until I received the meal and saw that they were less crispy than I want. I’m not a big fan of relish on burgers, but this one was pretty good (“red onion bacon marmalade,” how could it not be?).
To go with both of my main courses, I went with the Penner Ash pinot noir, which was incredibly wonderful and, although not their choice for each dish, I felt it worked well.
I only ate approximately a third of the burger and two fries. Then I had a mouthful of fried crab with my steak. The steak was modest, as were many of the other items, but that’s probably for the best since you may have as many as you want before flying. The meat was wonderful and the crab scrumptious, however it came out a little more done than the medium rare I’d requested.
When I was asked whether I wanted some dessert, I knew I had to at least take pictures. Here’s what’s on the dessert and post-meal drinks menu:
The sampling (‘dessert flight’) and the pineapple sponge cake were on my menu. I probably ate half of the sponge cake, which was more than I should have. It was incredible.
While I was asked to remain in Flagship dining after the dinner, I went to explore the rest of the (business class) lounge, which I’ll write about later.
Who Is Eligible For First Dining At The Flagship?
Inside the Flagship lounge is where you’ll find Flagship First Dining. It’s a unique inside entrance, and visitors must display an invitation card obtained at lounge reception.
Access to Flagship First Dining is restricted to:
- Passengers traveling American Airlines’ flagship first class to Asia, Australia, Europe, or South America, or between New York and Los Angeles and San Francisco.
- Historically, oneworld partners who paid for access (such as British Airways for their first class passengers in some locations, Cathay Pacific at New York JFK) and Concierge Key members who were given a limited number of passes, as well as those offered a buy-in option or who purchased access through American’s Five Star premium ground service) have been given priority.
This summer, six international flights with Flagship First Class will depart from New York JFK, nine from Los Angeles, and four from San Francisco.
- It will be available on all three nighttime Heathrow flights (the day flight is a Boeing 777-200 without first class)

Flagship now shuts at 11:15 p.m., but hours will be extended in June to accommodate the Doha flight.
In the Flagship First Dining Room, there is no tipping.
In 2007, then-LAX Managing Director Jim Moses (now Vice President of DFW) informed me that Flagship First Dining is considered an extension of the cabin, with no tipping allowed.
Officially, American Airlines states that tipping is not anticipated nor requested, which is a little more cautious in acknowledging that some passengers do tip and don’t explicitly state that they don’t.
However, I did not see any of the thank you notes that were previously utilized at the conclusion of the dinner, and what looked like a However I did not see any of the thank you cards presented at the end of the meal that used to be used, and very much looked like a $0 check – which was viewed by many as a prompt to tip. check – which was perceived by many as a suggestion to tip – was not there.
JFK’s First-Class Ground Experience Will Improve Even More
The American Airlines Flagship Check-in is being refurbished to give a direct passage through security to the lounge. American Airlines, in my opinion, should greet first-class guests at the curb, help with bags through the Flagship check-in procedure, and give escort to the lounge and subsequently to the gate. In other words, package their Five Star service with first-class tickets, like they did in Los Angeles when their Sydney service was originally re-launched. That would put American Airlines’ first-class ground experience on par with the world’s best – Air France, Lufthansa, and Thai Airlines (should Thai Airways bring back first class).
What Is Flagship First Dining’s Future?
The terminal will soon be home to British Airways, thus first-class amenities will be in high demand and seem to be worthwhile investments.
However, I’m curious about the future of American Airlines’ international and premium transcon first classes. There’s a speculation that the new Airbus A321XLR transcon planes will replace the A321T transcon planes, removing first class (and amply spaced coach) on New York – San Francisco and Los Angeles routes. There’s also a chance that new business class seats, which will arrive on brand new 787s, may supplant first class.
However, American has the potential to provide a fantastic international first-class product, with a ground experience that includes Flagship First Dining as a significant differentiator. In fact, Flagship First Dining makes me wish I was a Concierge Key member, since they’ve traditionally gotten a handful of invitations each year to utilize when they’re not travelling on a qualified ticket.
