American Airlines: Major expansion in Austin with 10 new routes

American Airlines is opening seven new annual routes from Austin and three seasonal routes. American is the second largest airline at Austin Airport after Southwest and has historically had some of the highest returns outside the hub. With these additions, they and their partners will serve 26 destinations from Austin.
- All year round: Las Vegas, Nashville, New Orleans, Orlando, Raleigh-Durham, Tampa and Washington Dulles.
- Saturday season: Aspen (June 5 – September 4), Los Cabos and Destin-Fort Walton Beach (June 5 – August 14).
These routes are divided into 5 main routes and 5 regional routes. Here’s the equipment:
American already operates the Austin-Orlando route on Saturdays. So this route is not really new, but a daily service will be.
In addition, American Airlines will enter into new codeshare agreements with Alaska Airlines: Portland, San Diego, San Francisco and Seattle, as well as the recently announced Alaska-Boise flight (all Austin-Alaska routes except San Jose, which American plans to operate).

New markets, big opportunities
Note that Nashville is a city centered on the Delta. Las Vegas is a relaxing place these days. Raleigh is in the spotlight in the city that holds Delta. And Washington Dulles was always a market where American had an untapped opportunity: They have a huge customer base in D.C. because of their dominance at the domestic airport, but they can’t serve many counties because of the perimeter rule. Austin is only 65 miles from the perimeter.
While it is difficult to separate operations in one city, this is the norm in New York (New York JFK, LaGuardia, Newark), and they already have some level of service at the 3 zoned airports in D.C.. Growth in Dulles makes sense both because it opens up new markets that customers currently need and because this particular business combines two strong technology clusters.
Of course, travel planning is pure speculation at this point, as we see the return of travel hopes and the decline of the virus this summer. There are more vacationers than business travelers, but some will return. In addition, the pandemic has reshuffled much of the playing field, giving airlines the opportunity to capture new areas where they previously could not operate due to a lack of gates or aircraft.
Historically, current management has avoided competition with other airlines and flown only very few routes that are not in or out of hubs. Austin is not a hub, it’s a satellite base. In the future, it will serve many cities outside the hub, whatever that means in this new world, of course. With the landing of the first of the Boeing 737-800 Oasis converted to MRO at Paine Field, followed by the landing of the 737 MAX, route planning and flight planning began to improve their ability to get flights off the ground quickly. They now apply these skills on the fly to adapt to the changing patterns brought on by the virus.

American is adding back-to-back service, which it planned to introduce in Boston and San Jose, at least according to published schedules. The joint presence in Austin will indeed be very important for the Americans with their partners JetBlue and Alaska.
June is certainly incomplete and could be optimistic, but Covid could drop significantly, making the current charts realistic. According to Cirium Diio, American, JetBlue and Alaska are planning flights in June:
- JetBlue: Boston, Fort Lauderdale, Newark, New York Kennedy, Los Angeles, Orlando, Raleigh, San Francisco and Cancun.
- Alaska: Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, San Jose and Boise from 17. June.
- American: Boston, Charlotte, Dallas – Fort Worth, New York JFK, Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Jose – plus flights to Las Vegas, Nashville, New Orleans, Orlando, Raleigh, Tampa and Washington Dulles and Aspen, Los Cabos and Fort Walton, Florida.
Of course, Alaska Airlines is a more integrated partnership than JetBlue. Alaska is even on its way to the world. So you can earn and redeem miles on Alaska Airlines flights, codeshare or not, and earn elite qualifying miles. This is not the case with JetBlue, where benefits have so far been limited to codeshare agreements, and American initially limited its codeshare with JetBlue to New York’s JFK airport. (Cancun and Fort Lauderdale, for example, are also not part of the Northeast Alliance – so there are no reciprocal benefits for those flights yet).
Austin is a great place to grow
Austin and Nashville have consistently been among the fastest growing airports in the country over the past seven years. Just before the pandemic, Austin opened 9 new gates, increasing capacity by more than a third. Austin welcomed 17.3 million passengers in 2019, tied with Dallas Love Field and Nashville and ahead of St. Louis. Louis.
The airport was close to an agreement to lease an American Express lounge even before the pandemic broke out. There is a beautiful new Delta lounge and an outdoor public terrace.
American has been planning for years to expand its Admirals Club into office space behind the lounge’s back wall, and the Do Times can’t find space there at peak times – even though the lounge’s entrance and conference room have been converted into seating for guests.
Austin is Delta’s largest city, but Delta remains the third largest airline after American and Southwest.
In 2019, there were 1,327 live music performances and airport restaurants served 1.6 million breakfast tacos and 71,798 pounds of brisket.
