In recognition of the International Day of Action for Rivers on 14. In March, highlighting the importance of rivers and climate change, Avalon Waterways reaffirms its ongoing commitment to sustainable tourism.

Over the past decade, we have made great strides in sustainable and responsible river boating for our guests and the planet, said Pam Hoffie, General Manager of Avalon Waterways. Avalon has invested in a state-of-the-art fleet of multi-purpose vessels and world-class technologies to reduce energy consumption, usage and emissions, as well as waste reduction and recycling programs to reduce environmental impact, conserve water and build a culture of sustainability among crew members and guests worldwide.

Current trend

In the past two years, Avalon has eliminated single-use plastics on board its ships and in its offices around the world.

The company has also partnered with The Ocean Cleanup, which is developing technology to remove plastic from the oceans before it enters waterways.

Avalon has reduced paper waste by 80% through digital communication and has invested in farmers to serve locally produced food and beverages on board.

Finally, the shipping company said it would use shore power, if possible, which would allow the Avalon to turn off its engines and reduce emissions.

Between 2021 and 2023, Avalon has set a goal of reducing paper waste to less than 1%, implementing a biofuel pilot program to reduce carbon emissions by 50%, and using electric thrusters to further reduce emissions.

The company will also generate clean energy in more and more destinations while its ships are docked, and invest even more with our partners in The Ocean Cleanup to fulfill their mission to eliminate 90 percent of the plastic in the world’s oceans, Avalon said.

Avalon Waterways’ green plan, which will be developed over the next two years, promises to reduce air emissions, increase local food production and offer environmentally friendly shore excursions, Hoffie said. But that’s not all. Our commitment also includes plans to launch the first all-electric river cruise ship by 2027.

Finally, Mr. Hoffie emphasized that Avalon is committed to protecting the planet and providing its customers with unparalleled, environmentally friendly recreation, now and in the future.
