It’s good to share!
Where is the best place to explore the Canadian rocks? There are many places, but one of them stands out to me as the perfect place to relax in the Rocky Mountains.
Last summer I planned a trip from Calgary to the small town of Golden BC and spent ten wonderful days in the Rocky Mountains. With about 3700 inhabitants, Golden is a friendly town with excellent restaurants, nice shops, cycle paths and a hiking trail along the Pinching Horse.
The city is also an ideal starting point for exploring six national parks in British Columbia and Alberta.
This article is about fun things to do in and around Golden Britain.
During the long summer days you will have plenty of time to explore and enjoy nature. In June and July the sun rises around 5.30 am and sets in gold around 10 pm. Speaking of time: Did you know that not everything is a Pacific time zone for Christ?

BC Gold Time Zone
The time in Golden BC is the same as Calgary Alberta – Time Zone – Alpine Summer Time in spring and summer and autumn and winter has changed to Alpine Standard Time.
Much of Eastern Kutenay, in the southeast of British Columbia, lies in the mountainous area and marks the summer.
When you visit Creston B.C., remember that the city observes Mountain Standard Time throughout the year. For example, in spring and summer the time in Creston corresponds to the Vancouver time zone, but in autumn and winter the time in Creston is the same as in Calgary.
Arrival at Golden BC
From Calgary to Gold it’s a 3 hour drive.
It’s easy to get to Golden from Calgary. We jump the Trans-Canada Hvi 1 in western direction and follow it to Golden. Take BC Hwy 95 south into town.
It’s a 7-hour drive from Vancouver to Golden.
To get from Vancouver to Golden, you have to drive all day. Take Trans-Canada Hwy 1 in an easterly direction and follow it to Golden, taking the southern exit of BC Hwy 95 to the city. Kamloops and salmon sleeves are popular stops along the way.
Golden Weather B.C.
You need to prepare for different golden weather conditions and pack a pair of raincoats with many layers so you can add or remove them if necessary.
In the mountains the weather changes quickly. Always take extra nappies with you, even when it’s sunny and warm while walking, cycling, kayaking, etc.
June, July and August are the warmest months of the Golden Age, with average temperatures in the twenties (70 F) and a cooling of about 10 degrees (50 F) at night.
Winter is the season of snow and skiing. Every winter the gold gets an average of 180 cm of snow.
The weather in spring and autumn is more unpredictable, so it is always best to check the weather forecast for gold and for each day trip destination.
National Parks at Golden BC
If you want to explore Canada’s national parks in Alberta and British Columbia, Golden is the place to be!
There are 6 national parks, which are only a few hours away from Golden Britain. Depending on the amount of time you have available in gold, you can make day trips to all these national parks.
- Glacier National Park of British Columbia
- British Columbia Kutenay National Park
- Revelstock National Park in British Columbia
- Yoho National Park, British Columbia
- Banff-Alberta National Park
- Jasper National Park of Alberta
If you only need to choose a few day trips, I recommend you to visit 4 national parks in British Columbia and book Banff and Jasper for another road trip.
Yoho National Park is the nearest national park to Golden. If you are alone in town for the weekend, Yoho National Park is the place for you. Don’t miss visiting Emerald Lake!
Waterton National Park is about a 5 hour drive from Golden, so it’s too far for a day trip, but if you’re staying in Calgary, you can first drive south to Waterton, then to Golden, and stop at Ferney and Radium on the way.
Red canoes on the Emerald Lake jetty in Yoho National Park.
Golden place BC
I stayed at the Airbnb in Golden. It wasn’t cheap. But I wanted a complete kitchen, so I could cook something to eat once in a while, especially breakfast.
You can find Golden Accommodation and book now.
In Golden there are many good restaurants, so you can have lunch every day if you want. Scroll down to see the restaurants I’ve tried in gold. Spoiler alarm – they were all great!
When I book hotels, I use Booking.com to view photos and read comments from other travelers. Check out our Golden BC hotel offer and book today!
Camping Golden BC
When I was on the Kickking Horse River Trail in Golden, I actually saw Golden I camping. Right next to the river, surrounded by trees and mountains is a beautiful place.
The Golden Camp site is quiet, unless a train passes by. The railway crosses the river directly from the campsite.
Next to the campsite there is a public swimming pool. I haven’t had the opportunity to swim, but the property is beautiful and the prices are reasonable.
Kickking Horse River Walk – Hiking trails on both sides of the Kickking Horse River are ideal for evening walks or at any other time of day.
Downtown Golden – Stroll around the city and visit the shops and restaurants. There is also a footpath that runs around the city. From the top of the hill you have a beautiful view and there are benches where you can stop to rest or have a picnic or wait to go back to town for a beer :).
Spirit Square and the wooden pedestrian bridge – Spirit Square is a meeting place for the community and often contains live music from events during the warmer months. Make sure you cross the wooden bridge as well. There are information signs on the bridge.
Mountain biking in Golden BC – Golden BC is a popular place for mountain bikers. On more than 100 km of cycle paths you will find the route adapted to your needs.
Kayaking, canoeing, rafting on the Kickking Horse River – I didn’t do any rafting, but you can try a ride on the Kickking Horse River. It is also possible to rent kayaks and canoes.
Mount Revelstock National Park – Take a day trip to Mount Revelstock National Park (about 2 hours drive) and enjoy the scenic, winding road to the top of the Meadow in Sky Parkway. Walk the paths and enjoy the mountain panorama.
Canada Glacier National Park should not be confused with Montana Glacier National Park. British Columbia Glacier Park is one of the least visited national parks in Canada. From Golden it takes about 45 minutes. Enjoy a walk in the Colombian mountains.
Yoho National Park is one of Canada’s most beautiful national parks. Don’t miss the natural bridge and the emerald lake. And there are two waterfalls I recommend: Wapta Cascade and Takkou Cascade.
These are two completely different waterfalls, so I advise you to walk with both of them. Takakkav is a short walk, while Wapta Falls is a longer walk.
Veld BC – Located in Yoho National Park, I advise you to have lunch in the Truffle Pig Bistro (they also have a house if you want to stay in Veld BC) and make sure you have room for a homemade ice cream compartment.
Banff National Park is Canada’s first national park and the most popular national park in the country. Hiking, fishing, boating, kayaking, canoeing, wildlife watching and enjoying the beauty of Canada’s outdoor cliffs.
Banff Citiesite – If you like tourist cities, Banff is the place to be! Banff is a big city surrounded by the Rocky Mountains. Visit the Banff Springs Hotel, the cave and pool and Upper Hot Springs.
Jasper National Park – About a 3 hour drive from Gold you can drive to Jasper National Park on one of the most beautiful roads in the world – the Icefields Parkway – and enjoy glacial lakes, breathtaking views and spectacular hiking trails. I advise you to walk the Five Lakes Valley and spend the night in Mistaya Canyon.
Kootenay National Park – Discover the beauty of Kootenay National Park through beautiful walks, hikes and camping. I have covered most of the paint pot path, but it got too dirty, so I have to go back to Kootenay for a longer walk. In the winter months you can ski, snowshoe and climb in the Kootenay National Park.
Radium Hot Springs – This village with less than 1000 inhabitants is a popular holiday destination in Calgary. Enjoy the hot springs and relax.
Golden BC Restaurants
Toothless Bistro – My first golden dish was a delicious salmon salad at Toothless Bistro. It’s a great bistro, suitable for a family dinner, a solo dinner or an evening with friends.
The Eleven22 is a lively and popular restaurant with excellent cuisine and service. A fusion of Canadian and Asian cuisine and highly recommended!
Big Bend Café. – My favorite place for breakfast. – Big Bend Café. I always go to a classic breakfast. They also have an impressive collection of hot sauces to choose from.
Purcell Coffee House – Another tourist recommended Purcell, so one morning I went for a bite and a cup of coffee. Good coffee.
The golden bakery is my place! I love cakes and cookies, tasty snacks for on the road or for walking.
Bacchus: books and coffee – books and coffee make me happy 🙂
The Gouden Boerenmarkt (Golden Farmers’ Market) visits the farmers’ market in the centre of the Gouden Plein on the Spiritplein on Wednesdays from noon to 5pm. Souvenir shop, purchase of preserves, bakery products, bread, biscuits, etc.
If you want to buy a Kraft beer in Golden BC, you should definitely go to the White Dental Beer Company. They have a large outdoor recreation area, friendly staff and a delicious beer!
If you want to save money and cook for yourself, you can shop at Golden BC stores. Gold owns an IGA grocery store and cheap food products.
Beer and wine were not sold in grocery stores before Christ. Buy a drink at the BC Wine Shop at 10 Ave, Mad Trapper at 9 Ave or Rocky Mountain Cold Bear, Wine & Spirits at 1 Hwy Street.
