On Wednesday, the Princess of the Norwegian Fjords was finally christened, solidifying the ship’s name ahead of its inaugural Alaska cruise next month. The ship, which will be part of Princess Cruises’s “Majestic Princess” program, will be the latest addition to the cruise line’s fleet. “The ship’s namesake was selected by a contest in which travelers were invited to submit their names for consideration. The Princess Royal, who is the highest-ranking female in the British army and the commander-in-chief of the Queen’s Guard, has named the crew of her new yacht.

The Majestic Princess will resume cruising next week, and the cruise line has named the captain and officers who will welcome passengers on board for the first time in 16 months.

Captain Dino Sagani and Captain Tony Draper will swap places at the helm of the Majestic Princess, at the head of a team of senior officers with more than 100 years of experience at sea.

Captain Dino Sagani

Captain Sagani has been with Princess Cruises for 26 years and was appointed captain of the Majestic Princess when it launched in 2017.

Captain Sagani has commanded several Princess ships, including Sea, Dawn, Sapphire, Diamond, Caribbean and Golden Princess, and has also served as captain on the Royal and Regal Princess.

Born in Trieste, Italy, he followed the family tradition and attended the Trieste Naval School, one of the oldest naval schools in Europe.

After graduation, he joined the Italian Navy and served on a minesweeper during the first Gulf War.

Sagani began working at Princess in 1995 and quickly rose through the ranks. In 2007, he was promoted to captain at the age of 37, making him the youngest captain in the history of the cruise line.

Captain Tony Draper

Captain Draper has commanded several Princess ships since 2006, including the inauguration of the Royal Princess in 2013, where he had the honour of hosting the ship’s godmother, Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cambridge.

He was also a fleet captain, overseeing the Ruby, Emerald, Crown, Caribbean, Dawn, Sun and Coral Princess, as well as sister company P&O Australia.

He began his naval career with the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, the civilian supply and logistics arm of the Royal Navy. In 1994 he obtained his Master’s Certificate and his British Commercial Pilot’s Licence, an expression of his lifelong interest in aviation.

In 1995, he joined Princess Cruises as navigator of the original Island Princess.

Other personnel and information

Chief engineer Massimiliano Imperiale, hotel general manager Charles Verwaal and crew captain Petar Lesic complete the management team of Majestic Princess.

Princess Cruises plans to resume U.S. service when the Majestic Princess enters service on the 25th. July from Seattle. This trip marks the beginning of an incomplete season of seven-day cruises in Alaska.
