The announcements by Crystal Cruises, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises to offer cruises in the Caribbean are now creating a ripple effect in the region.

The British Virgin Islands, a tiny archipelago known around the world for its white sandy beaches and beautiful blue waters, have announced that they will be opening their doors to cruises again. The first step for the archipelago will be the opening of a cruise ship berth in Tortola.

Celebrity Cruises first port of call

The government has agreed to reopen the cruise port in June 2021 to cruise ships with fully vaccinated passengers and crew.

Starting in June 2021, the famous Millennium will be one of the first international cruise ships to call at the region. As we reported last week, the ship will leave St. John’s in the early morning. St. Maarten. The itinerary includes stops in Tortola, Saint Lucia and Barbados.

Ma’am. Olinwyn Maynard, Agent. The Director General of the BVI Port Authority said:

We are very excited to be a part of this new regional itinerary, and while the cruise experience will be different than it was before the pandemic, we are committed to providing a safe and enjoyable experience for our cruise partners and their guests.

The return of cruise ships to the area will be good news for residents. Since last March, the islands have not been visited by ships, which normally have many boats in the area.

Safety first

The security aspect certainly plays a role for the BVI. As a small nation, the epidemic will be felt much more here than in the big city. Therefore, the country only accepts ships with 100% vaccination of passengers and crew and additional security measures.

According to a press release, the management team of the Cyril B. Romney Tortola Port and Wharf (CBRTPP) will work with the Ministry of Health and Social Development, the BVI Tourist Board, local cruise agents and cruise lines wishing to call at the territory to ensure a healthy return of cruises to the territory.

Mr. Vance Lewis, general manager of the marina, commented:

The health and safety of cruise passengers, crew and the local community is our highest priority and we will work closely with all partners to ensure the safe resumption of operations in the area.

The requirement for all passengers, including crew, on board to be fully vaccinated if over 18 years of age. In addition, Covid 19 outbreak prevention measures include pre-boarding screening, boarding precautions and passenger screening.

Economic aspect

The British Virgin Islands has been hit hard by the lack of tourism from cruise ships and long-term visitors. The economic aspect is proof of this. In 2018, when Hurricane Irma devastated most of the islands, total cruise and crew revenue was nearly $12 million.

This year the archipelago was visited by 140,000 guests, while in normal times, without the hurricanes, this number is 60% higher. With the opening of the port in June, the BVI will join several other islands that have made similar decisions.

Aruba, Curaçao, Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Martin, the Bahamas with Royal Caribbean or Crystal Cruises and Cozumel will be visited by cruise ships in the coming months. With the new launch in the UK, the success of the Singapore and European cruises and now the launch of the Caribbean cruises, there are sure to be more seats available in the coming weeks.
