The popular tourism destination of Key West, Florida will no longer be on the Carnival Cruise Line itineraries following Hurricane Irma. While they are trying to still salvage travel options for passengers in need, this is a major blow to travelers who may have been looking forward to visit the island city before it was unsinkable.

Carnival Cruise Line has announced that they will remove Key West from their upcoming sailings. The ban is set to take effect on September 1st, 2018.

Carnival Cruise Line Removes Key West on Upcoming Sailings

Because the cruise company is still unable to make calls to Key West, Carnival Cruise Line is informing customers of a modification to their forthcoming schedule. Three cruise ships’ itineraries have changed for sailings in January and February 2022.

Itinerary Changes on the Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival Cruise Line has notified guests booked on forthcoming sailings of itinerary adjustments for the Carnival Dream, Carnival Conquest, and Carnival Sunrise. Only a few sailings in January and February with a stop at Key West, Florida are affected.

The cruise port has already been removed from those three ships’ sailings, and the affected customers were just notified on January 13, leaving little time before the first rescheduled departure for Carnival Dream on January 15.

“As we revise our operating plans, we are still unable to call on Key West for the sailings mentioned below,” Carnival wrote in the message. Within 24 hours, the schedule adjustments will be displayed on Carnival.com.”

There are three itinerary modifications for the Carnival Dream sailing from Galveston, Texas. Only Freeport, Half Moon Cay, and Nassau, all in the Bahamas, will be visited on the sailings that leave on January 15, 29, and February 12, 2022. Previously, Key West was supposed to be the first port of call on such cruises, but that is no longer the case.

The Carnival Conquest, located in Miami, Florida, has omitted Key West from four sailings. All departures on January 24, 31, February 7, and 21, 2022, have been canceled. Those four-day cruises will now just feature a stop in Mexico’s Cozumel.

Only the Carnival Sunrise’s February 3 sailing, which is also located in Miami, Florida, has been disrupted. The three-day cruise will only stop in Cozumel, Mexico, and Key West will be skipped.

Carnival Cruise Line is automatically refunding any pre-purchased shore excursions that were booked through the cruise line back onto the Sail & Sign account. It is also important to note that some port arrival and departure times have changed.

Why was Key West omitted from the list?

In Key West, the issue is complicated, with some clamoring for a cruise ship ban. In reality, locals decided in November 2020 to restrict big cruise ships, setting a daily cruise ship visit limit of 1,500, prohibiting cruise ships with more than 1,300 people from docking, and giving preference to cruise ships with the greatest health and environmental records.

Despite the fact that the referendum to restrict and prohibit the biggest ships was a success, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis repealed it all in summer 2021. Bill 1194 was signed, allowing 94 percent of the formerly forbidden cruise ships to resume calling.

However, it has not been so straightforward, since there has been a greater effort in Key West to restrict or limit boats. The goal of the Safer Cleaner Ships initiative is to conserve the local reefs and ecology.

“On June 29, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis invalidated the results of a free and fair election in Key West and reversed limitations on cruise ship operations set by a supermajority of local voters,” the Safer Cleaner Ships website claims. Now, some of the world’s biggest and most damaging cruise ships are threatening the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and the Great Florida Reef.”

“We stand with the hardworking people of the Florida Keys and will continue to fight to preserve our reef, fishing, and economy safe from the danger of giant cruise ships.”

Any bigger cruise ships that have previously visited Key West have been targeted by the campaign. When it came to Carnival Cruise Line, Safer Cleaner Ships was planning a protest when the Carnival Sunrise was scheduled to dock on January 7, the first ship in the fleet to dock in in two years. A call on Carnival Conquest’s January 10 voyage has also been canceled. “We are continuing in negotiations with Key West authorities on our relaunch plans,” the cruise company said earlier in January. For the time being, the call to Key West will be skipped for the sailings listed below. We will be able to prolong our stay in Cozumel, Mexico as a result of this.”

What happens next remains to be seen, but for the time being, Carnival cruise ships are staying away from Key West until the problem is rectified.
