Celebrity Cruises has announced a new homeport for the summer season. The cruise line will move Celebrity Silhouette to the British Isles to join a number of other ships sailing in the UK as part of the revival of the domestic cruise industry.

The cruise line’s announcement comes on the heels of the announcement of new calls in St. John’s, Newfoundland. In addition, the company is based in St. Maarten in the Caribbean, in Athens, Greece, and now in Southampton, United Kingdom.

Sale of sails 6. April

Cruises aboard the Silhouette Star will be available starting at 6. April for sale. The breathtaking Celebrity Silhouette departs on the 3rd. July departs from Southampton for a series of 6-8 night voyages along the British coast.

Among the ports of call are some of the classic northern British ports; Celebrity will be one of the few companies to call at ports on its UK Staycation voyages.

The ship appears to be sailing more along the north coast of the United Kingdom, as the itinerary begins in Southampton, southern England, with stops in Belfast, Northern Ireland; Liverpool, England; Glasgow, Kirkwall and Inverness, Scotland; and a stop on the picturesque island of Portland, Dorset. The ship will also make a number of excursions.

Of course, most of the guests will be coming to the stop on their own, and since the celebrity has been getting a nice figure lately, she certainly has a lot to look forward to. Celebrity President and CEO Lisa Lutoff-Perlo said:

We are delighted to be back in Southampton after an absence of over a year. We are really committed to the UK market and look forward to welcoming our customers back on board. What could be better than a new luxury ship ready to take guests on a journey along one of the world’s most beautiful and stunning coastlines? This is extremely important, not only for us as a company, but also for the promotional efforts of the local UK tourism industry.

Updated for pandemic

This iconic silhouette will be one of the most exciting ships to sail in British waters this summer. In January and February 2020, the ship underwent an extensive refit that lasted 42 days. Customers who book a trip will be among the first to experience the new onboard amenities, views and locations.

The 313m-long, 122,000 gross ton ship was built in 2011 as part of the Solstice class by legendary German shipyard Meyer Werft and can accommodate 2,886 passengers at full capacity. However, the ship is expected to sail with far fewer guests when in the UK.

Test site ?

The UK is beginning to look like a new testing ground for the entire cruise industry. While some cruise lines have been able to sail with the new measures on board for some time, for others it will be a new experience.

So far, many cruise lines have sent ships to the shores of the British Isles. Although the cruise industry in the UK, as elsewhere, has been hit hard, it looks set to be one of the first regions to show signs of recovery.

However, since most of the ships will be operating with a limited number of passengers and most lines will only be operating with vaccinated customers, it remains to be seen if the relaunch will be a success or if it is just an exercise to see how the ships perform before we see a relaunch in the US later this year.

Whatever the situation and circumstances, one thing is certain. British cruise fans will be spoilt for choice in the coming months. With ships from Disney, Princess, Viking, Cunard and Fred Olsen and many others, customers have a wide choice. And to top it off, MSC Cruises has announced that it will be sending its flagship MSC Virtuosa to the UK.
