British cruise line Fred Olsen Cruise Lines has confirmed that it will cancel its flights for this year. Cruise Line says it will use the extra time to study how the introduction of the vaccine will affect its operations.

Delays in first sailing of new ships

The Borealis and the Bolette, the shipping company’s newest ships, will now sail at least a month later than their original departure dates of May 22 and 29. Departure in May 2021. Fred Olsen Cruise Lines said its new first cruise dates will be around the end of June.

The cancellation will result in the cancellation of 13 flights on the company’s three ships: Borealis, Bolette and Balmoral, while the company’s fourth ship, Braemar, will not be launched until spring 2022.

Fred Olsen Cruise Lines had originally planned to resume cruises aboard the Borealis for her maiden voyage on May 22, 2021, for the voyage to Bolette on May 29, 2021, and for Balmoral on May 9, 2021. June 2021.

Peter Deere, CEO of Fred. Olsen Cruz Lines stated:

We continually review our return to work dates in accordance with the latest government guidelines and work closely with CLIA and other industry associations to facilitate return to sailing.

This additional time will allow us to fully understand how the introduction of the vaccine will affect the procedures we perform on board and on land.

We know that our guests, like us, miss the cruises and we look forward to having them back on board when the time comes.

It is not yet known if Fred Olsen Cruise Lines will follow the same route as SAGA Cruises. Two weeks ago, SAGA announced that all guests must be vaccinated before being allowed to board.

This delay probably won’t please many of the company’s fans, but it’s hardly a surprise given the current isolation of the UK. Fred Olsen is contacting affected customers and offering them several options, including no refund or extra credit for future cruises.

Launching of new long-term vessels

The introduction of Borealis and Bolette is long overdue. Fred Olsen Cruise Lines has already announced plans to take over Amsterdam and Rotterdam from Seattle-based Holland America Line in July 2020.

Fred Olsen Jr. said at the time:

This capacity expansion proves that we have confidence in the future. With over 170 years of maritime history, we’ve been through a lot of tough times. With these new additions to the fleet, we will be stronger and ready to serve the award-winning routes we are known for.

The former Amsterdam, built by Fincantieri in Italy in 2000, measures 62,735 gross tons and can accommodate 1,380 guests. The MS Borealis, with a gross weight of 61,849 tons and space for 1,404 guests, is the former Rotterdam, built by Fincantieri and launched on 21. December 1996.

Start dates of UK cruises unclear

Although start dates have been set for UK cruise lines, it is still unclear when they will be allowed to set sail. Although the UK Government has been actively working with CLIA UK & Ireland and the Chamber of Commerce to create a framework for the resumption of cruises, this work was completed in October last year. Since then, very little information has been published.

Current reload dates for other cruise lines in the UK are listed below, but are currently fluctuating as there is no end in sight to the UK exclusion, despite a strong vaccination campaign.

  • P&O Cruises UK : April 2021
  • Cunard: Queen Victoria on the 17th. May 2021, Queen Mary 2 on June 4, 2021 and Queen Elizabeth on June 14, 2021. June 2021.
  • SAGA Cruises: The spirit of adventure will take place on the 4th. May 2021 resumes, Spirit of Discovery at 2. June 2021.
  • Marella Cruz: European operations to 31. March 2021. The cruise line also announced the return of all long voyages by the 30th. April 2021 postponed.

It looks like the US and UK cruise lines will be delayed for a long time. It seems that the only places we can hope for regular cruises are Italy and Singapore.
