At the end of this month, the Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines will begin sailings from Boston, MA and New York, NY to begin its first ever cruise line from the United States. The brand new Royal Caribbean International(RCLI) will join the Royal Caribbean brand to bring the world of cruises to the east coast.

The MSC Cruises brand of “small ships in big ports” has been experiencing a tremendous growth over the last few years and is now the biggest cruise line in the world. Over the last decade MSC Cruises has expanded to 34 ports of call in Europe, the Caribbean, the United States, and Asia, and will be adding two new destinations in 2018: Miami and Fort Lauderdale. In the US, the MSC brand of small ships in big ports will be seen in Boston and New York.

The luxury cruise line Crystal Cruises will depart from Boston in August and from New York in September. The Crystal Symphony will be the shipping company’s second ship to enter service, after Crystal Cruises launched the Crystal Serenity in the Bahamas earlier this month.

The home ports of the Crystal Symphony are Boston and New York. The ships depart from the Manhattan Cruise Terminal in New York and the Flynn Cruise Port in Boston. It will be the first ship to sail on the northeast coast of the U.S. since the industry took a break more than 16 months ago.

Luxurious discoveries in Bermuda

Guests wishing to travel aboard the Crystal Symphony can do so beginning August 22, when the ship departs from Flynn Cruiseport Boston for the first of four voyages. Seven-day cruises include two full days and two nights in Bermuda, while guests can spend a few days at sea relaxing and enjoying the ship at both ends.

After the first four calls, the ship will start on 24 September. Then it departs from New York’s Manhattan Cruise Terminal for nine sailings each Friday, including an impressive departure from New York City.

The Crystal Symphony was originally to sail around the world from Antigua and St. Lucia. These trips have been replaced by cruises to Bermuda. The cruise line decided to change the Crystal Symphony’s itinerary due to increased demand for cruises from the United States, as guests were unable or unwilling to travel long distances to board the ship:

Jack Anderson, president of Crystal:

As the entire travel industry recovers from the stress of the global pandemic, flexibility plays a key role in restoring meaningful experiences for travelers. For cruises in particular, recent positive changes in ship departures from U.S. ports have led U.S. travelers to prefer more direct access to luxury cruises closer to home.

increased health needs

As the cruise industry slowly gets back to work, Crystal Cruises has decided to offer cruises to the east coast of Bermuda only to guests who have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

The company is also implementing Crystal Clean+ protocols, including enhanced hygiene standards, capacity control, social distance on board, contactless catering, reduced capacity and increased health monitoring of all guests and crew members. Guests and crew members are also required to comply with Bermuda’s local health and safety regulations.

Bermuda’s Minister of Transport, the Honourable Lawrence Scott, believes that visitors can still fully enjoy the island:

We welcome guests to Crystal Symphony’s 21 square miles of beautiful open space and pink sand beaches in Bermuda and invite them to relax and enjoy all the culture, adventure and entertainment we have to offer, knowing that strict protocols ensure a healthy, safe and enjoyable experience.

New York and Boston want to open

Flynn officials from Cruiseport Boston and Manhattan Cruise Terminal are excited about the return of cruises to the East Coast. Before the pandemic, more than 400,000 cruise passengers frequented Boston Harbor, contributing more than $100 million to the local economy. Twenty different cruise lines depart regularly from Boston.

Port of Massport Director Michael Meyran :

We look forward to welcoming cruisers back to Flynn Cruiseport Boston this summer and giving New England residents and others the chance to experience Bermuda. Massport and Crystal Cruises are actively working on a port agreement that is coordinated with local and state health authorities and meets all required CDC protocols.

New York is a traditional port of call for Crystal Cruises, and the port is more than happy to welcome another of its ships.

Steve Levitsky, Vice President of Cruise Ports America:

Ports America is delighted to welcome the Crystal Symphony to New York as its homeport. We’ve been working with Crystal Cruises for ten years, which hosts its ships at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal and many U.S. ports, and we look forward to a successful return this fall.

Earlier this month, Crystal Cruises’ Crystal Serenity left the Bahamas for the first time. The Crystal Symphony will be Crystal Cruises’ second ship to launch in the Americas.
