Update on Cruise News

Time to get your weekly Update on Cruise News and it has been a mixture with developments on two cruise ships needing repairs, cruise ships finally making a return to Grand Cayman, the final journey for another Fantasy-class vessel, another sailing canceled for Norwegian Escape, and a new Miami-themed zone for Carnival’s upcoming new mega-ship.

The Cruise Ships Have Arrived in Grand Cayman

After a two-year wait, cruise ships have begun to return to Grand Cayman in the western Caribbean. On March 21, 2022, the Disney Magic became the first cruise ship to return.

Guests were greeted warmly as they boarded tender boats to go onshore. Approximately 2,500 people boarded the Disney Magic during its stay. The Disney cruise ship stopped at Grand Cayman on March 19 as part of a five-day voyage that began in PortMiami, Florida.

The Carnival Paradise and Carnival Sunrise were the first of numerous Carnival Cruise ships to visit the island in the coming weeks. On March 23, the two ships moored off the coast of Grand Caymon.

On March 24, the Carnival Glory paid a visit to the Cayman Islands. Three Carnival cruise ships will dock at the same time on April 6: the Carnival Vista, Carnival Paradise, and Carnival Sunrise. Carnival Horizon will arrive on April 13 and Carnival Pride will visit on April 8 and 12.

Celebrity Cruises will bring four of its ships to the Cayman Islands in the next month. Celebrity Edge on April 1 & 13, Celebrity Equinox on April 17, Celebrity Apex visited on March 24 and will call again on April 7, and Celebrity Reflection on March 30.

There will also be ships from Disney Cruise Line, Holland America Line, MSC Cruises, and Princess Cruises. Following the government of Cayman Island’s decision to relax the cruise ship prohibition, a total of 21 ships will arrive from March 21 to April 17. The next step of resuming cruise ship travel will commence at that time.

Carnival Escape’s third cruise has been canceled.

The Norwegian Escape ran aground while leaving Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, on March 14, 2022, affecting more passengers. The cruise operator notified passengers that their departure from Port Canaveral on March 26 had been canceled.

NCL said that the delay was due to maintenance going longer than anticipated. The initial plan for the March 26 journey was for a 7-day Caribbean itinerary, with Puerto Plata as the first port of call after a day at sea.

Other ports of call were St. Thomas in the United States Virgin Islands, Tortola in the United Kingdom Virgin Islands, and Great Stirrup Cay, Norwegian Cruise Line’s own island in The Bahamas. A total of two days at sea were also supposed to be included in the program.

While the cruise operator has not offered an update on the extent of the damage to the Norwegian Escape, the ship was assessed after it was released from the sandbar and remained moored in Puerto Plata while passengers were sent home. The March 12 and 19 sailings have already been canceled due to the grounding and damage.

Getaway to Port Canaveral, Norway

The majority of Norwegian Getaway’s European trips have been canceled, and the ship will be redeployed to Port Canaveral, Florida in mid-June instead.

This comes after the cruise operator decided to drop St. Petersburg, Russia, from its Baltic sailings shortly after the crisis in Eastern Europe began in February. Norwegian Cruise Company was the first major cruise line to make such drastic alterations to its itineraries, but other cruise companies have since followed suit. The company therefore decided to eliminate Norwegian Getaway from the area completely on March 15.

We now know that the ship will set sail from Copenhagen, Denmark, on Tuesday, June 14, 2022, on her journey to her summer homeport. The 13-day journey will culminate on June 27 in Port Canaveral.

During the summer months, Norwegian Getaway will offer a range of Caribbean itineraries ranging from 5 to 10 days in length, depending on the sailing date. The ship will continue to cruise in the Caribbean until November, when she will relocate to New York for the winter, when she will travel to Bermuda and the Caribbean.

Carnival Sensation is on its way to the scrapyard.

The Carnival Sensation’s retirement was originally announced in early February, when it was revealed that the ship will not resume passenger service. The ship was supposed to start cruising from Mobile, Alabama, on March 7, 2022, however the sailings were moved to Carnival Ecstasy.

The Carnival Sensation was initially just delayed, but it was quickly revealed that the ship would not be returning to operation. The ship was put up for sale and promptly scrapped.

Carnival Sensation sailed across the Atlantic Ocean for the last time on March 18, departing from her holding station in the Bahamas. On April 4, 2022, she is planned to arrive at the Aliaga shipbreaking facility in Turkey.

Despite the fact that the ship has not carried passengers since the industry-wide pandemic closure started more than two years ago, the Carnival Sensation has been a valuable asset to the cruise company in recent months. The ship has been utilized to lodge crew members moving in and out of quarantine and isolation periods, rather than making commercial excursions.

The Carnival Sensation was the third of the Fantasy-class ships to start service in 1993. The ship is 70,367 gross tonnage, with a capacity of 2,052 passengers and 920 crew members.

Repairs for Carnival Glory

On the next Carnival Glory excursion, which leaves New Orleans on Sunday, March 27, 2022, the cruise company plans to make some repairs to the ship. The ship’s docking mechanism will be repaired starting on Sunday, according to a letter addressed to passengers.

The anticipated visit to Mahogany Bay, Isla Roatan in Honduras on Wednesday, March 30, has been canceled due to repairs on the ship. On March 29, the port will be replaced by Progreso, Mexico.

Progreso would be the natural option for repairs on a Conquest-class vessel, but no additional specifics on the repair work were provided in the letter.

The Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, who also constructed the Carnival Glory in 2003, has a maintenance facility in Progreso. The pier at Progreso is likewise much bigger than the one in Mahogany Bay.

The seven-day western Caribbean itinerary, which includes three sea days and a planned stop at Belize on March 31 and then Cozumel, Mexico on April 1, remains unchanged. On April 3, the Carnival Glory will return to its homeport of New Orleans.

New Zone with a Carnival Celebration Theme

Carnival Cruise Line has released additional information about a unique themed zone that will debut on the next Carnival Celebration of the Excel class. The new zone will pay respect to Carnival Cruise Line’s headquarters, the ship’s principal homeport, and the city where the company was founded — Miami.

The “820 Biscayne” themed neighborhood, named after Carnival’s original headquarters location, will showcase the culture, architectural styles, and cuisines of the city where the line was started in 1972.

The zone will have the same amenities as sister ship Mardi Gras’ La Piazza zone, including as the famed Rudi’s Seagrill and Cucina del Capitano speciality restaurants, but the layouts and décor will be updated to reflect a tropical, Miami ambiance. Similarly, the ship’s 24-hour pizza and deli restaurant will feature brighter and more themed decor. Cocktails with a Miami theme will be available at Bar 820.

Carnival Celebration is presently being built at Finland’s Meyer Turku shipyard and will make its debut in Miami in November 2022.
