The Canadian government has announced a new ban on cruise ships, and this ban will really affect the industry. Cruise ships are currently banned from operating in Canada for an entire year, affecting all major cruise lines and some of the country’s major cruise centers.

Ban on cruises in Canada for one year

As the global pandemic continues to spread, the Canadian government has just announced what the cruise industry was already dreading. Cruise ships are currently allowed in Canada until the 28th. February 2022 banned.

That means you can tick off all your cruise vacation plans from the country’s major cruise ports, including Vancouver, Montreal and Halifax. The ban applies to cruise ships with 100 or more passengers. Ships are also prohibited from entering Arctic waters.

The previous cruise ship ban was lifted on the 28th. February 2021 repealed. Companies can be fined up to $25,000 per day if they violate the rules. There is also a $5,000 fine if people break the rules.

In addition, individuals who fail to comply with the passenger vessel ban can be fined up to $1 million or imprisoned for up to 18 months, or both, on summary conviction.

Cruise ships with fewer than 100 passengers may still sail, but must follow local protocols.

Why a one-year suspension?

That’s not news that cruise lines like to hear, nor do the thousands of cruise passengers who are hoping to enjoy another holiday at sea at the end of the year.

The main goal of the Canadian government is to ensure that people stay safe and healthy. In this order, the authorities would focus on the most pressing issues, including the introduction of vaccines and the investigation of new options. Cruise needs to take a step back now.

The Honourable Member Omar Algabra, Minister of Transport, has responded:

As Canadians continue to do their part to stop the spread of COVID-19, our government continues to work to ensure that Canada’s transportation system remains safe. Temporary bans on cruise ships and pleasure craft are essential to continue protecting the most vulnerable and not to overburden our health systems. It’s doing the right thing and the responsible thing.

The government continues to advise its citizens to avoid travel on cruise ships, not only in Canada but around the world, until further notice.

Big bang for the cruise industry

After all, the cruise industry has already been hit hard by travel restrictions and closures. This will now lead to a new round of suspensions of cruises from Canada and routes with scheduled stops.

The situation is not getting any easier for cruise lines, and there are already signs that another suspension of the US summer may be just a matter of time. Questions were asked about the impact of Alaska cruises for the upcoming season.
