The travel industry celebrated a watershed moment on Thursday when G7 leaders agreed on seven fundamental principles aimed at fostering a “long-term recovery for the international tourism sector.”

Their commitments were made during the G7 transport and health conference yesterday, the first of its kind to bring together G7 transport and health ministers from key global economies. Delegates from the United States, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Italy, as well as the European Union as a guest, make up the G7 inter-governmental forum.

Reopening from COVID-19

While no specific or tangible measures were announced yesterday, obtaining global leaders’ united commitment to harmonize their border rules to ease international travel is an accomplishment in and of itself. And it was only the start of the discussion. G7 countries are “committed to continue this discussion, and to increasing collaboration on enabling the safe and sustainable reopening of international travel,” said to UK Transport Secretary Grant Shapps, who convened the meeting.

The seven essential principles will drive the establishment of global travel norms, ensuring a long-term recovery and setting precedents for future policy responses to developing problems.

These are the seven basic principles:

— Protecting the transportation industry from potential health risks

— Ensuring that critical transportation workers are treated fairly and are kept safe.

—When adopting vaccine certification systems, keep privacy and data security in mind.

—Reiterating the importance of scientific data in the development of international travel policies

—Ensuring that national responses are fair and equitable.

—Maintaining frequent multilateral and international involvement

—Providing a secure, long-term, and resilient recovery

The G7 members also agreed to prioritize measures to decarbonize transportation and safeguard the rights of sector employees in order to create a long-term global recovery. They all agreed that ongoing testing and vaccinations are critical in reducing the dangers associated with the present pandemic and any future infectious disease outbreaks.

One of the most challenging problems confronting G7 and non-G7 countries alike seems to be achieving consistency in vaccination identification, although ministers recognized the significance of exchanging information on such common concerns and learning from others’ experiences.

This announcement comes ahead of the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) High-Level Conference on COVID-19, which will take place later this month. Ministers reaffirmed their support for the ICAO’s efforts to harmonize travel regulations and aid interoperability of immunization certificates and applications, according to Shapps. “At the ICAO High-Level Conference on COVID-19 in October, the G7 ministers expressed their intention to achieve a common global consensus on a unified vision for aviation recovery, resilience, and sustainability beyond the global pandemic.”
