Tired of waiting for the United States to reauthorize cruise lines to sail Caribbean waters? The Mexican island of Cozumel is reaching out to European cruise ships and presenting itself as a home port.

This island of 100,000 people, dependent on tourism, is located 12 miles off the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, near Playa del Carmen. One of Cozumel’s cruise lines is targeting the Swiss company MSC, which currently operates successful Mediterranean cruises. MSC was the first major shipping company to set sail with the full COVID-19 protocol in mid-August 2020 and continued to do so, with some interruptions, when limits were tightened during the virus outbreak.

Departure from the United States is not scheduled until May, and it is feared that these delays will also occur as the cruise lines await instructions from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on the next steps for reintegration.

According to Joaquin Delbuiz, cruise ships homeported in Mexico can offer Caribbean itineraries without having to enter U.S. waters. Other possible route ideas include cruises from Progreso, Yucatán and Havana, Cuba, he said.

There is hope it could start with one or two weekly sailings from here, he said.

Mexico has been hit hard by the global health crisis. The country currently ranks 13th in the world with a total of nearly two million diagnosed cases, but it ranks third in total deaths with nearly 167,000.

Despite this, tourism continued in Mexico, which before the pandemic was the 7th most visited country in the world. The numbers are much lower – the number of arrivals in November 2020 was 45 per cent lower than the previous year – but thousands of people continue to flock to the country’s seaside resorts.
