Before you board your next flight, make sure that everyone on-board is vaccinated. The TSA has struggled to reach the vaccination goal by a self-imposed deadline of Dec. 31, 2018 despite facing funding cuts and staff shortages.
The “does tsa require covid vaccine for employees” is a question that has been asked many times. The answer to the question is no, but the deadline looms.
As the deadline for civilian federal government workers to be completely vaccinated against COVID-19 approaches, over 40% of Transportation Security Administration (TSA) personnel remain unvaccinated.
In an interview with CNN on October 13, TSA Administrator David Pekoske remarked, “We have around 60% of our employees vaccinated, and that percentage has to move quite a bit higher over the next several weeks.”

The deadline has been set for November 22, the Monday before Thanksgiving, which falls amid one of the busiest travel weeks of the year. There are just a little more than five weeks remaining.
That may seem like a lot of time until you remember that Moderna’s two-dose vaccination regimen needs the jabs to be administered four weeks apart and that a full 14 days must pass after the last dosage of any vaccine before a person is declared completely immunized.
Pfizer’s two doses may be administered three weeks apart, making October 18 the final potential day to begin your vaccination course and still fulfill the deadline. The earliest Moderna could have started their immunization regimen would have been October 11.
Many civilian government workers who didn’t prepare ahead of time may have one final chance in acquiring a single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccination. The earliest they could get the J&J product would be November 8, which is two weeks before the deadline.
Pekoske expressed “extreme optimism” that additional personnel, particularly checkpoint screeners, will reach the deadline and that the agency will avoid staffing shortages. During the busy Christmas season, TSA personnel shortages will almost certainly result in lengthier waits at checkpoints.

“We’re making contingency preparations in case we have any personnel shortages as a consequence of this,” Pekoske said, “but I’m hoping to prevent that.” “We continue to push personnel to receive their immunization through regularly scheduled town hall meetings, shift briefings, and broadcast communications to the workforce,” a TSA spokeswoman told The Points Guy (TPG) in an email.
With the White House just announcing that restrictions on vaccinated foreign people would be lifted beginning November 8, there will undoubtedly be a surge in incoming and outgoing international travel in the following months.
“Employees who opt to remain unvaccinated for COVID-19 and have not obtained or have a pending request for a legally permitted exemption will face consequences, up to and including dismissal from federal employment,” according to the TSA spokeswoman.
“We expect the great majority of TSA staff to get vaccinations.” Every week, tens of thousands of TSA workers update their vaccination status,” the representative noted.
