Viking Queen and Viking Star were delivered to Fincantieri’s shipyard in late 2018. The two new ships are the first of a series that will make up part of the company’s fleet for its next generation.
The ships will carry guests on journeys around North America, Europe, Asia and Australia from 2020-2024.
Viking Ocean Cruises has just delivered the newest ship to their fleet. The new vessel is called the “Viking Ocean Cruises 2022” and it’s been built by Fincantieri. Read more in detail here: viking ocean cruises 2022.
Viking has taken receipt of its newest ship, Viking Mars, joining the line’s exclusive ocean fleet.
Fincantieri’s shipyard in Ancona, Italy, on the Adriatic Sea, hosted the historic event on Thursday, May 12, 2022. The ship is presently on its way to Valletta, Malta, for its May 17th is the naming ceremony..
Ceremonies for the Viking Mars Delivery
The delivery ceremony for a cruise ship occurs when the shipyard hands over the vessel to the cruise line. This technical transfer of ownership is often marked with fanfare, gratitude and recognition for the building crew, and introductions of the ship’s master and officers.
“Today, we are extremely delighted to welcome the newest ocean ship to our award-winning fleet as we celebrate our 25th anniversary and a year of key milestones for Viking,” stated Torstein Hagen, Chairman of Viking.
Viking Mars is the newest ship of Viking’s award-winning ocean fleet, which comprises six similar sister ships — Star, Sea, Sky, Orion, Jupiter, and Venus – all prefaced with the name “Viking.” With just 47,842 gross tonnage and a guest capacity of 930 adventurous passengers, the new ship maintains the line’s tried and true exclusivity.

All cabins and suites on the Viking Mars have verandahs and provide a selection of deluxe amenities such as breathtaking ocean views, premium toiletries, and enough storage.
On board, visitors will appreciate the line’s subtle elegance and Scandinavian style, which will not detract from the ship’s amazing locations.
On May 28, Viking Mars will embark on her inaugural passenger voyage, a 14-night round-trip from Barcelona, Spain to Bergen, Norway. The ship will stop in beautiful ports in England, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands along the journey.
Additional itineraries will take the ship to amazing destinations in northern Europe, Iceland, and the British Isles in the following weeks, before it heads to the Mediterranean in late September.
The arrival of Viking Mars coincides with the line’s 25th anniversary celebrations. Viking Expeditions and Viking Octantis, the business’s first purpose-built Polar Class vessel, were launched in January, and the company named eight new European river ships at a special ceremony in Paris in March.
Viking will also welcome a second similar expedition ship, Viking Polaris, a second identical ocean ship, Viking Neptune, as well as additional purpose-built boats for the Nile, Mekong, and Mississippi rivers by the end of 2022.
May 17th is the naming ceremony.
While the new vessel is now technically Viking’s, the ceremonial rituals have yet to be completed. Lady Fiona Carnarvon, the Countess of Carnarvon, will formally christened Viking Mars on May 17 in Malta by her ceremonial godmother.

Various speeches and blessings will undoubtedly be given during the naming ceremony to introduce the new ship and prepare her to welcome passengers for years of safe sailing.
“By acting as godmother to the Viking Mars, Lady Carnarvon has honored us, and we look forward to greeting passengers on board this lovely new sister ship in the coming weeks,” Hagen remarked.
In recent years, Viking has provided a number of opportunities for visitors to visit Highclere Castle, the home of the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon and the shooting set for the popular British historical drama Downton Abbey.
The home is often included on pre- and post-cruise extensions on certain river and ocean journeys, giving privileged guests unparalleled access to the Earl’s remarkable private collection of Egyptian treasures. Viking.TV, Viking’s award-winning enrichment channel, has also chronicled the castle.
Lady Carnarvon is also the ceremonial godmother of the Viking Skadi, a Viking Longship that joined the line’s fleet in 2019 and is now conducting river sailings between Budapest and Amsterdam.
Viking Cruises has announced the newest Ocean Ship will be delivered to them from Fincantieri. This is a ship that was designed by Fincantieri and built in Italy. The ship will have two pools, a fitness center, and a theater. Reference: cruise near me.
