Norwegian Cruise Line has announced that all passengers on its ships will be required to be vaccinated against the flu prior to boarding the ship. The decision comes after a record-breaking 2015 among which the outbreak of a severe flu strain among children on board the Norwegian Dream was not only of great concern but also directly linked to the death of a 10 month old child.

Well, the information about this is a bit spread out, so I’m going to cut and paste it here. From the Norwegian Cruise Line’s “Norwegian Bliss” site: The Norwegian Bliss will be the first Norwegian Cruise Line ship to require all passengers to be vaccinated against measles, mumps and rubella (German measles). The company cites the need to maintain passenger health. “We take our responsibility to keep our guests and crew healthy very seriously,” says Norwegian Cruise Line’s Vice President of Environmental, Food Safety and Quality, Chip Carter. “This also means that we’ll be requiring all passengers to have up-to-date immunizations against measles, mumps and rubella – a virus that can cause serious illness, particularly

Norwegian Cruise Line is the first line in the world to extend mandatory vaccination to their passengers, offering mandatory vaccination to passengers sailing Norway, Bermuda and Canada. Norwegian Cruise Line has extended the need for all guests and staff to be vaccinated for all sailings until at least December 31, 2021.

“Under the advice of internationally renowned public health experts and to prioritize the health and safety of our guests, crew, and the communities we visit, we have chosen to extend guest vaccination requirements for all sailings until December 31, 2021,” a spokesman for the company stated.

Children who are not old enough to be vaccinated will not be permitted to travel with Norwegian Cruise Line under its existing criteria, as has been the case since the line’s ships began commercial trips earlier this summer after a year off.

“We anxiously anticipate the US Food and Drug Administration’s extension of the age requirement for vaccinations,” the spokesman added, “so we can once again welcome these visitors onboard.”

During a conference call last week, Frank Del Rio, CEO of parent firm Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, stated that Norwegian Cruise Line was considering extending this requirement, citing a decrease in July net bookings owing to fewer new bookings and somewhat higher cancellations. The Delta version became more widely available throughout the globe, resulting in a decrease in reservations.

Norwegian Cruise Line said it will “continue to review and adapt our health and safety procedures with our team of scientific and public health professionals as research and technology develop” in its statement.

On the line’s ships, social distance and the wearing of masks are not needed due to the 100% immunization policy. However, such restrictions apply to the cruise terminal on the day of embarkation and may also apply in some ports.

All guests will be required to undergo antigen testing at the port before to embarkation, which will be performed and paid for by the cruise company.

Norwegian Cruise Line’s vaccination obligation will be extended for another two months as a result of the revised date. It was formerly scheduled to end on October 31, 2021.
