Residents refer to Jacksonville as “the country’s biggest little town” because of the close-knit community feel that flourishes in the nation’s largest metropolis by landmass.
The city’s sustainable culinary culture, which has been developing in recent years but is even more essential now that the pandemic has brought sustainability to the forefront of many people’s minds, is part of this close-knit community feel.
What’s Hot Right Now
Congaree & Penn was founded by Scott and Lindsay Meyer in 2014 as the area’s first rice mill, but it also produces fruits and other vegetables, has a farm-to-table restaurant, and provides agrotourism experiences such as a morning walk with the farm’s goat companions that finishes with a wonderful breakfast. The farm’s 300 acres provide lots of exciting activities for the entire family, as well as seasonal fruit-picking adventures and wedding event space.
Two additional restaurants, Town Hall and Prati Italia, are owned and operated by Jacksonville’s star chef, two-time James Beard Award nominee Chef Tom Gray, who was motivated to introduce sustainability and farm-to-table restaurants to his hometown after working in California.
“One of the great things about dealing with smaller farmers, merchants, and producers is that they tend to specialize in one or two things, so you frequently get to see the best of the best…and that translates into flavor,” Gray said. Guests may discover a list of some of the local merchants, purveyors, and farmers that provide the restaurants with fresh, frequently organic products on the websites of both restaurants.
Prati Italia serves delectable Italian fare, while Town Hall has everything for everyone, with a reference to Florida’s historic seafood history. Both restaurants provide seasonal menus that emphasize the significance of local food: “We often look at produce first to determine how the menu should develop,” Gray said.
Gray collaborated with a local supermarket to provide freshly cooked to-go meals based on his trademark recipes, frequently including gluten-free and vegan choices, as a means to continue preparing food for people throughout the epidemic.
A short look at the city’s Yelp restaurant listing reveals a plethora of varied, locally-owned eateries providing anything from delectable ramen to mouth-watering Brazilian BBQ, with something for everyone’s taste buds.
