The Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort reopened its doors in early November after a nearly $80 million overhaul, with new restaurants and a new lobby lounge. The renovations mark the completion of the resort’s $700 million master plan, which included the addition of the Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach in 2010 and the Outrigger Kono in 2012. The new lobby lounge includes floor-to-ceiling windows offering views of Waikiki Beach and the city skyline, with a second-story patio that offers more of the same. The resort has also added several new dining options, including the Wokano Chinese Kitchen, the Outrigger Café and the Ocean Bar & Grill.

The Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort on Waikiki Beach has reopened following a $80 million renovation. The five-star hotel is now part of a global management company, which hopes to appeal to the sophisticated tastes of guests, and it’s unveiling a new meeting space with a rustic-chic appeal. A grand staircase greets guests at the entrance of the property, which boasts two separate towers. While the historic Outrigger Reef Tower is home to a luxury spa and personal butler service, the new Tower at Waikiki features a state-of-the-art convention center, which is being touted as “the most unique meeting space in Waikiki.”

Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach, one of seven resorts located directly on the sands of famed Waikiki Beach, today unveiled its $80 million transformation, a completely renovated collection of rooms and suites and other exciting new features. All combine barefoot luxury with a pervasive sense of place and many elements that honor Hawaii’s cultural heritage.

In redesigning its flagship property, Outrigger Resorts has focused on creating a modern beach retreat rooted in Hawaiian culture with an emphasis on wellness and unparalleled hospitality. Preliminary prices start at $179 per night.

Current trend

Marcus Krebs, the new general manager of the Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Hotel, said: In redesigning the resort, we strived to retain everything that makes Outrigger Reef so special to guests, while bringing a new energy and elegance to the resort. Guests will see a new vision of Waikiki, in keeping with its dynamic heritage.

The extensive renovation has brought with it a number of improvements, including renovated and expanded rooms and suites, a redesigned pool, a new spa wing, the Coral Kids Club, the fully renovated Kani Ka Pila Grill and Stage, expanded shops and a new Monkeypod Kitchen by Merriman restaurant on the beach.

Jeff Wagoner, president and CEO of Outrigger Hospitality Group, said: An $80 million investment in our flagship Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort will bring new energy and elegance to this iconic destination, which has always been a place of healing and rejuvenation for Hawaiian royalty. One is immediately reminded of this historical legacy as one approaches the new main entrance, which has been dramatically altered to reflect Waikiki’s authentic cultural heritage and enduring aloha spirit.

The newcomers experience begins upon entry with the impressive Hale (house) atrium, lit by lanterns made from traditional fish baskets and exuding the warmth and elegance of a traditional Hawaiian beach house. In the hotel lobby is a 3-foot mural of a double-hulled canoe created by Herb Kane, co-founder of the Polynesian Voyaging Society and a popular Hawaiian historian. The mural pays tribute to the Outrigger’s decades of cooperation with the association.

The rooms and suites now exude a chic modern living atmosphere, achieved by combining classic Polynesian design with a mid-century modern tropical aesthetic. Carefully selected works of art – including historic photographs, contemporary illustrations of sea creatures, and original travel-themed artwork (again by noted artist and historian Herb Caen) – adorn the walls of all rooms and hallways. Of course, many of the rooms also offer spectacular ocean views, which is always nice to see.

Outrigger Reef Resort consists of three separate buildings within the sprawling complex: Ocean Tower, Pacific Tower and the new Diamond Head Tower. The newest building is a five-story oceanfront building that has been converted into 23 spacious, new rooms and suites. Other upcoming openings include the exclusive Voyager 47 Club Lounge (available to guests in suites or Club-level rooms), the new Waiola Wellness Wing, the Coral Kids Club and the Monkeypod Kitchen.

There is one aspect of Outrigger Reef that will not change: the resort’s ongoing commitment to preserving Hawaii’s authentic heritage and sharing it with its guests: Outrigger Reef has been a beacon of Hawaiian culture for decades with its award-winning cultural programs, unique Hawaiian artifacts, daily concerts featuring Hawaiian music and spectacular oceanfront location.

To immerse visitors in Hawaiian culture and heritage, many cultural activities are hosted by master craftsmen and artists, including hula, ukulele, flower necklace making and wood carving classes, storytelling by native Hawaiians and exhibits on the islands’ maritime history.

The resort’s rich tradition of floating canoes and guide stones, timeless symbols of exploration and courage, is reflected in all physical spaces and brought to life in the family programming of the new cultural activity center, creating a uniquely authentic experience for visitors, Krebs said.

Following the official opening of the resort today, guests will enjoy new rooms and suites, a renovated pool and the Kani Ka Pila Grille restaurant, which now features a larger stage and additional outdoor seating. That night, the Kani Ka Pila Grille will also resume its nightly live music program featuring award-winning artists, reaffirming the venue’s reputation as the home of Hawaiian music in Waikiki.

Some of the new public spaces at Outrigger Reef will not be fully available until the fall of 2021, including the renovated market and retail space and the Monkeypod Kitchen. Led by Chef Peter Merriman, a culinary pioneer and founder of regional Hawaiian cuisine, the brand new restaurant will complement the resort’s new design by evoking a sense of place, using local materials and collaborating with local artists to bring the 12,000 square foot beachfront area to life.

Outrigger and Monkeypod Kitchen have one thing in common: authenticity. At the restaurant, guests can connect with the islands through food, drink and live music to support positive change in the surrounding community. The menu intentionally creates a deeper connection to the land and the people involved in the creation of each dish and drink by emphasizing socially conscious and sustainable high-quality products from local Hawaiian farmers, fishermen, brewers and distillers. When the restaurant opens later this year, Monkeypod Kitchen will offer breakfast, lunch, dinner and an all-day bar menu that includes tasty cocktails, hand-selected wines and craft beers.
