American AAdvantage miles are some of the most flexible and valuable points in the world. If you have an American Airlines credit card and a Citi Thank You card, you can use the points you have to book flights on American Airlines, and transfer the rest to Citi Thank You. As explained in this post, there is a benefit to transferring Citi Thank You points when you: 1) Don’t have enough points to book a hotel or flight, and 2) You want to use the points for a different airline. For example, if you have the Citi Thank You Premier or Citi Thank You Preferred card, points can be transferred for a flight booked on the Citi Thank You website, and then converted to Avios for use

You’ve probably heard by now that Chase has been offering bonuses on AA cards for obtaining the Chase Sapphire Reserve card. Well, the Citi Prestige card is also eligible for the same offer, if you can transfer your points from Citi to AA. (If you were able to transfer your Citi Prestige points to American AAdvantage last year, you can still do so even without the transfer bonus.)

One of the biggest drawbacks to the Citi card is its 2% transfer fee. Since the Citi card is not a cash back card, this puts a damper on getting a good return on your spending. But with American Airlines’ new transfer bonus, it’s possible to transfer a lot of points. Most people go through this as one last ditch effort to get some value out of their points and then cancel the card. But is it worth it?

Should you transfer all of your Citi points to American AAdvantage while you still have the opportunity?

I am compensated for the content and many links on my site. Citibank, American Express, Chase, Barclays, and Capital One are all advertising partners on this site. My advertising partners have not reviewed, authorized, or supported any of the views stated in this article. I don’t write about all credit cards; instead, I concentrate on miles, points, and cash back (and currencies that can be converted into the same). The offers and perks mentioned on this website are subject to the terms.

After $4,000 in purchases during the first three months of account activation, Citi Premier® Card is giving its biggest-ever introductory bonus of 80,000 bonus points.

Right now, that’s one of the two greatest deals on a new consumer rewards card. In fact, if you’re not qualified for the 100,000 point offer with a Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card due to 5/24 or other factors, this is the second greatest first bonus offer available, in my view.

Citibank points have now become even more valuable, as they may now be transferred 1:1 into American AAdvantage until November 23, 2021.

You may transfer your points to a number of frequent flyer programs, including:

  • Aeromexico Club Premier, Air France KLM Flying Blue are members of the SkyTeam alliance.
  • Cathay Pacific Asia Miles, Malaysia Airlines Enrich, Qantas Frequent Flyer, Qatar Airways Privilege Club, American AAdvantage (until 11/23/21) are all part of the oneworld alliance.
  • Star Alliance: Avianca LifeMiles, EVA Air Infinity MileageLands, Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, Thai Airways Royal Orchid Plus, Turkish Airlines Miles & Smiles
  • Emirates Skywards, Etihad Guest, JetBlue TrueBlue, Virgin Atlantic Flying Club are non-alliance airlines.

“Is it wise to put all my Citi Thank You points into AA?” a reader wondered. After all, they’re the only major U.S. airline that works with the Thank You program for point transfers, and it’s a deal that’s about to expire.

  1. I don’t understand why there’s such a hurry; at the very least, it’ll remain accessible until mid-November. My prediction is that it will become a permanent part of the program, but that is just a guess. (Perhaps there will be a break before the feature is brought back as part of the next co-brand agreement re-up.)
  2. At the very least, hold off until November to see whether new information regarding the future of these transfers or alternative applications for the points affects your decision (including bonuses to other attractive transfer partners).
  3. It’s also been more than 5 years since AAdvantage re-priced partner rewards. Alaska Airlines just announced Qatar Airways rewards that are not subject to AAdvantage fees. As a result, I wouldn’t be surprised if American’s prizes were adjusted. AAdvantage’s president said that the company is considering changing its reward charts.
  4. Also, as Citi transfer partners, I prefer EVA, Turkish, and Qatar very a bit.

I’ve redeemed more American miles than any other money for my personal trips. This is undeniably appealing, particularly given the option’s stated expiration date. I just value transferrable rewards so highly that I’m not sure I’d make the transfer unless I had a particular near-term redemption in mind.

However, the Citi Premier® Card’s offer of 80,000 bonus points after $4,000 in purchases during the first three months of account creation is a fantastic deal, made even better by the ability to transfer those points to American AAdvantage.
