Spirit Airlines, the largest low-cost carrier in the U.S., announced on Wednesday that it will launch new nonstop service from Fort Lauderdale to Puerto Rico’s southern coast for $99 each way next week.. Spirit is currently experiencing record growth with over 900% more seats sold this year compared to last year.

Spirit has been flying from San Juan to the island’s southern coast since January of this year. The airline will be launching nonstop service from San Juan to Ponce, Puerto Rico on December 18th that is expected to provide increased capacity and take-off slots for its current route network.Spirit Airlines is launching a new nonstop service from San Juan to the southern coast of Puerto Rico. Spirit Airlines said today that it would extend its service to Puerto Rico by adding additional flights to Mercedita International Airport (PSE) in Ponce, the island’s southernmost city. Spirit also operates flights to San Juan (SJU) on the island’s northern coast and Aguadilla (BQN) on the island’s northwestern point.

On February 16, 2022, Spirit will begin flying daily flights between Orlando (MCO) and PSE. MCO is one of Spirit’s busiest airports, with over 70 flights per day. From here, the low-cost airline will provide one-stop flights to more than a dozen U.S. destinations.


Spirit’s Vice President of Network Planning, John Kirby, remarked, “Adding Ponce as our third market in Puerto Rico is a terrific way to commemorate 20 years of Spirit servicing the island.” “Our new nonstop flights to Orlando link to a variety of high-value travel alternatives for flying into or out of Ponce, as well as supporting the thriving and developing Puerto Rican population in Central Florida.”

Spirit first arrived in Puerto Rico in 2001 with a service to San Juan, which was followed by a service extension to Aguadilla in 2007. Customers will be able to pick from eight nonstop itineraries between Florida and Puerto Rico airports now that flights to Ponce have been added as a third option.
