Burnsville is a small town in North Carolina located at the foot of Mount Mitchell, the highest mountain in the country east of the Mississippi River. If you want to learn more about the history of this part of North Carolina, start with a walk through downtown Burnsville, with history and humor.
You will discover the history (dating back to the 1700s) and the unusual stories of the inhabitants that have been passed down from generation to generation.
A place not to be missed is the beautiful town square. This nature reserve is a pleasant place to picnic or listen to local groups.
In the middle of the square is a statue of Otway Burns, the town’s namesake. He was an American soldier during the War of 1812 and later a senator from the state of North Carolina.

Allow plenty of time to explore downtown Brevard, especially if you are not visiting the city.
You will find many picturesque boutiques and eclectic shops as well as several cafes and restaurants.
And you’ll find that there’s more to this city than just the shops. Art is everywhere, thanks to the Toe River Arts Council.
You’ll find beautiful murals and exhibits at every turn, so be sure to take a stroll and get off the beaten path!
There’s something about the mountain breweries of North Carolina. This mountain water makes a very good beer!
In the heart of Burnsville, you’ll find Homeplace Brewer. This brewery uses local ingredients from Yancey County and surrounding areas to brew some of the best beers in this part of North Carolina.
The newly expanded brewery now has a dining room that serves wood-fired pizzas, wings and sandwiches.

Mount Mitchell State Park
One of the most popular things to do in Burnsville is to visit Mount Mitchell State Park.
The highest peak east of the Mississippi, at 6,684 feet, offers the most beautiful view of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
At the summit you will find an observation deck, a museum and several hiking trails to explore.
Mount Mitchell is part of the North Carolina Mountain Trail to the Sea. If you plan to hike in this area, be aware that it is quite intense. Don’t forget to bring good walking shoes and walking poles!
Naked Starry Sky Observatory
One of the most unique things to do in Burnsville, NC, is to visit the Dark Sky Observatory at night.
Depending on the time of your arrival, you can see the moon, various planets and stars through a custom Newtonian telescope and learn about the night sky.
Dress for the weather as you will be spending the evening outside.
