Saint John in the desert

St John’s Historic Church and Cemetery in the Wilderness

Built in 1834, St. Mary’s Parish was incorporated in 1834. St. John’s in the Desert is the oldest Episcopal parish in western North Carolina.

Located in North Carolina, the church was built by wealthy merchants and landowners from South Carolina (from Charleston and other parts of the Lowcountry) who vacationed in the area during the warm summer months.

When the first chapel burned down, a new one was built in brick.
