Their wedding was originally scheduled for October 2020, but Jodi Reynard and David Bushman realized something had to change. The couple, both Broadway actors, had planned to marry at Fort Tryon Park in New York. But when they decided to push back their wedding date to May 2021, they realized that a destination wedding was an easier option.

I remembered a rustic-chic barn wedding, and David loved the idea of such a venue, Reynard said. We searched online for party venues in the Catskills and found Owls Hoot Barn. After visiting the place, we knew we had to get married there. A smaller venue and a more intimate guest list proved very appropriate.

Indeed, the wedding industry works hard. Many weddings originally scheduled for 2020 will now be postponed until the summer and fall seasons of 2021.

But as different countries and regions open up, what are the trends in wedding ceremonies for LGBTQ couples? We spoke with several industry experts to get an idea of what these ceremonies will look like in the months and years ahead.

Kirsten Ott Palladino, editorial director and co-founder of Equally Wed & Equally Wed Pro, noted that same-sex couples are increasingly partnering with wedding venues to give them even more personality.

Very often wedding venues try to make life easier for newlyweds by offering packages, and that’s fine, but more and more couples are looking for an even more personal experience. Some venues are rising to the challenge by offering extra tours for the group, allowing the couple’s photographer to shoot the wedding rather than insisting that the hotel’s photographer get the job, and, most importantly, respecting the diversity of the couple and their guests through truly LGBTQ+-inclusive practices, Palladino said.

Weddings have become very design-oriented this year, says Cassie McNulty, catering sales manager at the Ace Hotel & Swim Club in Palm Springs. Couples limit the number of guests and spend more money to create a space that is completely unique to them. This may include lounge areas with rental furniture, updated lighting, accent pieces and pool equipment.

She also noted that couples are looking for versatile spaces that can be set up for sophisticated, refined dining and transformed into the party of a lifetime.

Alesia Walstrum, sales manager at the Saguaro Hotel (also in Palm Springs), noted that they have been doing a lot of micro weddings and off-site weddings lately, which fits the trend toward smaller events.

Current trend

COVID effects

But Covid-19 has not only delayed many marriages, it has forced many couples to rethink what is most important to them.

People’s priorities have become clearer, spending more on experiences, photos and videos than on things like decorations, napkins, stationery and so on, says Birna Hrönn Björnsdottir of Pink Iceland, the country’s first gay travel agency.

According to McNulty, couples are choosing to shorten their guest list and focus on close family and best friends.

The Palm Springs market has definitely changed, and we’re seeing more couples in our market like in Los Angeles, Orange County and San Francisco, she says.

Mr. Palladino commented that it is good that people can leave the country safely, and their guests should be able to do the same. When the response to the virus was swift and vigorous, she said, the return was more successful in most cases.

Rules about safety measures for guests are part of that, she said. Brides and grooms and their guests are much more likely to celebrate their weddings in establishments where staff wear masks and have been vaccinated and which follow CDC guidelines by imposing temperature controls on guests and providing disinfection stations.

We are used to dealing with all kinds of setbacks in life, but on the wedding day it becomes even more serious when the couple is vulnerable and emotions run high, says Bjørnsdottir.

Jody Reynard and David Bushman chose a rustic wedding in the Catskills.

New hotspots

Walstrum explained that until recently, California did not allow receptions and placed restrictions on who could attend the ceremonies.

This has led to a huge shutdown and cancellation of weddings, she said. We’ve had a few small shoots since opening in June and up until recently. In June 2021, we will celebrate our first big wedding. Now that couples can get married again and travel restrictions have been eased, we are receiving many more requests, and the fall season looks promising!

Iceland has always been a popular destination because of its amazing nature, Bjørnsdottir says. The recently added erupting volcano is certainly the next hottest target, as it is both accessible, highly visible, safe (or as safe as an active volcano can be), and expected to erupt within [a few] months.

I see a lot of offers and breakaways in Iceland, Palladino said. For large-scale weddings with guests, Hawaii, Mexico (especially the Riviera Maya, which prides itself on being positive and inclusive), Spain, Italy, Greece and Australia are popular locations for Equally Wed couples. Now that Costa Rica has introduced marriage equality, it will surely increase its appeal for weddings!

Palladino said the LGBTQ community is as diverse as any other community. In this light, she believes that some couples want to feel included and respected more than others, while others just don’t want to be treated disrespectfully.

LGBTQ+ couples are also looking for places where they won’t be arrested for kissing in public, and for countries where LGBTQ+ residents are treated as second-class citizens, she added. A wedding is one of the most important events in a couple’s relationship, and they deserve to feel safe, valued and understood as they celebrate and commit their lives to each other.Weddings are a special time in peoples lives. They are often times a culmination of years of planning, and usually involve friends and family. Therefore, people spend a lot of money to make their special day the most memorable it can be..
