The United States is looking for alternatives to gasoline and diesel, specifically biofuel made from natural gas. This alternative fuel has a better carbon footprint than traditional fuels but comes at the price of increased fertilizers needed in its production. Experts say this will be more effective with advancements in technology that can use methane emitted by cows and other livestock as an energy source instead of needing it just to produce fertilizer

United To Try Another Sustainable Fuel Alternative is a company that has developed a sustainable aviation fuel. The company claims that the fuel will be able to run airplanes on it for up to 30 years without needing to be replaced.

United Airlines is teaming with a Houston biotech business that specializes in carbon dioxide, which has continuously been a pioneer in the aviation industry in experimenting with new sustainable fuel options.

That airline hopes to convert the remaining unusable oxygen into a long-term aviation fuel (SAF).

What’s Hot Right Now

United and Oxy Low Carbon Ventures today announced a partnership with Cemvita Factory to commercialize SAF produced by a groundbreaking new method using carbon dioxide and synthetic microorganisms. United has also declared a stake in Cemvita Factory. Cemvita Factory was founded by OLCV, a subsidiary of Occidental (Oxy).

“At United, we’ve been consistent in leading the airline industry with bold action when it comes to fighting climate change – and that starts with building an ecosystem around companies like Cemvita Factory to create and commercialize new SAF technologies,” said Michael Leskinen, President of United Airlines Ventures. “This is clearly a global necessity, and our collaboration with Oxy Low Carbon Ventures demonstrates our commitment to forging cross-sector partnerships and partnering with firms that share our sustainability aims.”

United and OLCV have already collaborated on innovative climate change strategies. UAV and OLCV will collaborate to support development efforts at Cemvita to convert CO2 into hydrocarbons for SAF. UAV and OLCV want to create a joint venture to market the technology if performance objectives are met. This covers programs like as pilot and demonstration plants, engineering studies, and financing and running SAF plants.

“We think that using SAF to decrease global aviation emissions and advance decarbonization activities to address climate change is a viable method,” said Richard Jackson, President, Operations, U.S. Onshore Resources and Carbon Management, Oxy. “We’re excited to work with United and Cemvita to help SAF innovation reach commercial scale faster.”

In December, United became the first airline to fly a commercial aircraft entirely powered by alternative fuel.

The “sustainable aviation fuel demand” is a growing market. United Airlines has decided to try out another sustainable fuel alternative, and they have chosen bio-jet fuel.
