The potential pathogen, known as COVID-PIV was found in the fruit bat species. The virus is similar to the Ebola virus and has not yet been seen outside of Africa. Travelers who hope to avoid becoming infected will need vaccinations for this new variant before heading abroad.

The “south africa people” is a new Covid variant that has been recently identified in the US. The US bans travel from southern Africa as a result.

US Bans Travel From Southern Africa Over New Covid Variant

Travel from Southern Africa is prohibited in the United States due to a new Covid variant.

on November 26, 2021 by Gary Leff

The United States recently reopened travel to vaccinated travelers following an illogical policy of barring entrance to people who had been to high-profile outbreak nations while accepting others from some of the world’s worst-affected countries.

In response to the discovery of a novel Covid-19 variety in South Africa, the United States has imposed travel restrictions on South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Malawi.

  • This only applies to non-citizens (doesn’t this mean that citizens of the United States can’t propagate the new variant?)
  • And it won’t start until Monday (due to the holiday weekend, we’ve urged the virus to hold off on spreading).

The following letter in the Greek alphabet, Nu, was generally anticipated to be given to the variation, but the World Health Organization chose Omnicron instead, skipping Nu and, it seems, also Xi.

Several countries, notably the United Kingdom and Europe, have already restricted travel from the area. Hong Kong, Belgium, and Israel have all reported cases. The lady in Belgium who tested positive for the new strain had no ties to South Africa. Her symptoms began 11 days after her trip to the Middle East.

Outside of isolated island states, a travel restriction suggests that governments are ‘doing something,’ but it does not halt the epidemic.

  • The viral variety is already causing havoc in communities, and it isn’t only in South Africa.
  • Before entering the United States, people go from South Africa to countries where there are no travel restrictions.
  • Only land border crossings are subject to the US restriction.

We don’t yet sure whether or if this new variation will become dominant, or how well it will evade immune defense. It’s concerning because of how much it’s mutated (32 mutations in the spike protein), potentially allowing immune escape (the spike protein looks different than what we’ve developed antibodies against from vaccination or prior infection), and because it appears to be up to 500% more transmissible than the original Wuhan strain (by comparison, Delta is considered 70% more transmissible).

Five brief tweets on the new B.1.1.529 variant

First and foremost, keep in mind that the data shown here is *extremely* preliminary, and anything might change. Still, it’s better to be cautious than sorry.

1) According to our statistics, this version is out-competing others *far* quicker than Beta and even Delta.

The virus will continue to change as long as it is widely transmitted. And, contrary to popular belief, it seems to have a wider spectrum of mutations within which it may stay infectious to humans. Similar mutations seem to be occurring all across the planet. Stopping individuals from entering the nation from one location will not safeguard us.

Either this variation is better fit or it isn’t. Because Paxlovid does not target the spike protein, it should continue to be extremely effective against it. That must be authorized right now. We also need the low-cost paper strip tests, which I first mentioned over a year ago and which most of Europe has now received. That way, you’ll know whether you have Covid promptly and be able to take an effective antiviral (Paxlovid works best within 3 days of symptom start), as well as isolate yourself if you’re contagious.

We’ve had poor booster messaging, resulting in low uptake as tens of millions of vaccine doses expire in the United States (boosters aren’t the reason global vaccine supply is restricted). Science has provided us with the tools we need to handle and control this; now is the time to treat it like a pandemic and get out of the way. At this point, travel prohibitions are just window decoration, not genuine policy.
