Over the past 16 months, the U.S. government has closed a portion of the border with Mexico with the intent of preventing drug smuggling and illegal immigration. The government closed the border in San Diego, Yuma, and El Paso, where the closure radius covers 1,360 miles. The government closed the border again this week, this time for another 474 miles in Ajo, Tucson, and Nogales, Arizona. The intention of the second closure is to increase security along the border.

As reported previously, the U.S. government has decided to extend the border closure along the Canada/US border, which is in effect until further notice. The closure has caused the largest number of travelers to be held at the border crossing for the longest period of time in the history of the crossing. The new closure was imposed for the sole purpose of preventing terrorists from illegally entering the United States from Canada or Mexico.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced Thursday that the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will expand the number of ports of entry and the number of checkpoints along the U.S.-Canadian and U.S.-Mexican borders. The DHS will replace more than 50 inspection lanes at the land border crossings with Canada and Mexico. The DHS will also increase the number of Border Patrol agents, and will add more canine teams, snipers, and aircraft.. Read more about when will us borders reopen and let us know what you think.

The US administration has decided to keep land crossings with Canada and Mexico closed to non-essential travel until August 21.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), according to Reuters.com, issued the new 30-day extension only days after Canada said it would accept fully vaccinated US travelers on August 9 for non-essential travel.

Reopening from COVID-19

The Department of Homeland Security said it is in “constant communication with Canadian and Mexican colleagues to determine the circumstances under which limitations may be securely and sustainably eased.” Since March 2020, the US has continued to expand the limitations on Canada and Mexico on a monthly basis.

According to Reuters, President Joe Biden’s administration is holding a series of high-level talks this week to explore travel restrictions and the potential of requiring visitors to get the COVID-19 vaccination.

Canadians and Mexicans are still allowed to enter the United States via aircraft, but they must provide evidence of a negative COVID-19 test result before entering.

Tori Emerson Barnes, Executive Vice President of Public Affairs and Policy for the United States Travel Association, released the following statement in response to the United States’ decision to prolong border restrictions:

“Every day our borders stay closed, our industry’s recovery is slowed even further, inflicting more harm to the millions of Americans whose livelihoods are dependent on travel. Each month, the United States’ economy loses $1.5 billion in potential travel exports due to the closing of the Canadian border.

“Given the high immunization rates on both sides of the border, we can safely return to our top foreign tourist source market. Pre-pandemic, land travel accounted for more than half of all Canadian overnight trips to the United States, resulting in substantial travel exports that sustain important American employment.

“Canada made the correct decision in establishing a timetable for vaccinated Americans to cross the land border and visit, and it’s past time for the United States to do the same: There is no difference between a fully vaccinated Canadian and a fully vaccinated American. We encourage the Biden administration to set a date and make a strategy to welcome Canadian tourists at U.S. land borders as soon as possible.”

The Trump Administration has issued an Order that will keep the U.S. border with Mexico closed for an indefinite period of time. This is a result of the government shutdown, which was caused by President Trump’s insistence on signing a border wall funding bill with a legislative fix that did not include funding for the wall. As a result, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will be closing the border indefinitely through March 5, 2020. The government shutdown and land border closures are complicating travel between the U.S. and Canada and Mexico.. Read more about us canada border reddit and let us know what you think.
