One of the best vineyards in the Napa Valley, Beringer Vineyards is located on St. Helena in the heart of the valley. The entire property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a historic district.

We’ve been to Napa Valley several times and could never resist making at least one brief stop for a walk through the Beringer vineyards, even if we didn’t have a tasting booked. The vineyard is beautiful any time of year and the walk is a delight.

Discover the history of the Beringer vineyards
One of the most famous vineyards in the Napa Valley, Beringer Vineyards was founded in 1875 when Jacob and Frederick Beringer purchased 215 acres of land on St. Helena. Jacob Beringer emigrated from Mainz to the United States in 1868. He worked for Charles Krug for several years.

Beringer’s first harvest in 1876 yielded 40,000 litres of wine. The Beringer vineyards are the oldest continuously operating wineries in the Napa Valley. They pioneered gravity-based vinification, where different levels for different stages of production allow the wine to flow gently, by gravity, from one stage to the next.
Beringer was also the first vineyard to use hand-dug cellars for winemaking: The first cellar was dug by Chinese workers in 1876.

Admiration for architecture
La Maison du Rhin, the jewel of the Beringer estate, is our favorite vineyard in the Napa Valley. There are many beautiful cellars in the valley, but it is only the grace and sweet grandeur that enchants you.
The Rheinhaus, completed in 1884, is the former home of Friedrich Beringer. At the request of his client, architect Albert Schroepfer designed the house in the style of a single-family dwelling in Mainz.
Rhine House is a historic site in California.
The Victorian mansion is decorated with many turrets and gables and has 17 rooms. The entire building is beautifully detailed, but don’t miss the many beautiful stained glass windows that accounted for almost 20% of the cost of the entire structure!
You will see beautiful stained glass windows and doors.
The warm stone contrasts nicely with the dark roof, and the location amidst lush gardens with a traditional central fountain will impress you. It’s a postcard picture!
The house was built for only twenty-eight thousand dollars and is a California historic landmark.
In addition to the Rhine House, you can also visit the building of the former cellar, which is located on a slope so that the brothers can carry out the gravity flow of winemaking. It has three levels, with the grapes being received and crushed on the third floor, fermented on the second and stored on the bottom floor.

The estate also includes the Hudson House, the former home of Jacob Beringer. Frederick Beringer is said to have left his brother’s house to build his own house, the Rhine House, on the site. The Hudson house was already on the property when the Beringer brothers bought it.
The estate also includes wine cellars and tunnels dug into the mountains, but we haven’t entered them yet.
Hot stones everywhere!
Visit to gardens and grounds
The beautiful grounds and gardens of the Beringer vineyards are ideal for walks at any time of year. Numerous paths bordered by flowering trees connect the various parts of the estate.

In spring and summer the oleander flowers in white and pink. Flowering plants and bushes are everywhere, butterflies and hummingbirds enjoy the nectar of the many flowers. Hedges and pruning shapes contribute to a neat appearance.
The ornate potted fountain in the central courtyard is a feast for the eyes. This is the central point of the gardens, with a beach of warm stones around it and a wide driveway leading to it.
We love walking down this beautiful driveway!
You will also see fruit trees: We photographed nectarines in the summer and beautiful persimmon apples with orange leaves and fruit in the fall when we visited one of the fall regions. There is a vineyard that is part of the property, as well as some vines on the property.

Beringer Vineyards offers hotel tours and wine tastings. In fact, they were the first to offer tours of the valley, which began in 1934 after the end of reclamation in late 1933.
Various tastings are currently on offer from Thursday to Sunday, all outdoors and at the time of writing by reservation only. Beringer is known for the size and quality of its range of wines, particularly Cabernet and Chardonnay.
You can enjoy a wine tasting on the veranda of the historic Rhine House or on the old vineyard promenade. There will also be a visit for the whole family.
