It doesn’t matter when you visit Iceland, you can be sure that you will see some great places. If you visit Iceland in spring (March-May) it can be cold and wet, which also gives you a chance to see the Northern Lights and the snow, things you might not see if you were here at another time of year!

Things you should know about visiting Iceland in spring

Spring can be an ideal time in Iceland, because most tourist areas are much less crowded. Because of this the prices for excursions and hotels are much lower.

Although the snow season is slowing down, it is likely that there is still snow in Iceland in March and April.

Visiting Iceland in the Spring

If you plan to travel to Iceland during these two months, the roads may be closed due to snow and ice.

Otherwise the end of April and May are ideal for travelling in Iceland, because almost all roads are clean.

If you travel to Iceland in spring, you can attend two popular tourist events if you plan your trip carefully:

The ice caves are open until the beginning of March. After this period it’s too hot for them to enter safely.

The Northern Lights season runs from the end of August to mid-April. So if you travel until May, you might be able to get a tour of the Northern Lights.

Whatever way you plan to spend your time in Iceland, make sure you know the weather and pack accordingly.

Weather in Iceland during the spring months

Spring is only cold in March, April is a bit warm and May is nice weather. If the temperature rises over the months, the chance of precipitation is also high.

Mars High temperature 63°F/17°C
April High temperature 73°F/ 23°C
May High temperature 79°F/ 26°C

Iceland is full of wonderful things to do outside, but don’t forget that there are plenty of places to explore inside when it’s raining hard and you don’t want to get wet!

Amount of daylight during the spring months

In spring you will see the sun shine for about 11 to 20 hours, depending on the month in which you visit Iceland.

  • The month of March has 11 hours of light, with the sun rising around 8 o’clock.
  • The month of April passes at 14-15 hours of daylight, with the sun starting to rise at 6 in the morning.
  • Treat yourself to the luxury of 18 to 20 hours of daylight.

The more you come to Iceland in spring, the longer the daylight will be, which means you’ll have more time to discover all that Iceland has to offer!

Most popular items in Iceland in spring

Visiting Iceland in the Spring

Swimming in a geothermal pool

One of my favourite activities in Iceland on cool spring days is a visit to one of the geothermal swimming pools.

Iceland lies on a volcanic geothermal field, which means you can enjoy naturally heated swimming pools.

These pools are filled with minerals that have a natural healing effect and are an ideal way to relax on cooler days.

Although the Blue Lagoon is the most popular geothermal pool in Iceland, we prefer small natural pools such as the Secret Lagoon.

Chaika Forest waterfall Type

Iceland has many waterfalls, but none is comparable to Gullfoss, and its strength increases during the spring months when the glaciers melt.

Come on, whale watching

One of the most popular activities in Iceland is whale watching, and if you travel to Iceland between April and October, the chances of seeing whales are very good.

See the aurora borealis

When it comes to seeing the northern lights in Iceland, the sooner you travel this year the better. They are most visible from the end of August to mid-April.

You can see them everywhere, but it is best to see them where they are darkest or along the coast.

Icelandic spring events

The food and entertainment festival takes place from February to the beginning of March. You will notice that restaurants in Reykjavik offer a menu with traditional Icelandic ingredients.

The Reykjavik Folk Festival usually takes place in the weekend of early March. In the Auberge Kex you will attend 12 musical performances.

Good Friday – Easter Monday is a religious holiday and many things will be closed.

The Reykjavik Blues Festival usually takes place at the beginning of April.

Labour Day in Iceland – 4. Mei. It is a national holiday and most are closed.
