If you’ve never visited Denver, you’re in for a real treat. With the Broncos in football, the Nuggets in basketball, the Avalanche in hockey, and, of course, the Colorado Rockies in baseball, it’s a big sports town. When you throw in the culture, the lively eating scene, and the breathtaking landscape, you have yourself a fantastic trip.

The fact that Denver was able to pull this off at all is a testimony to the city’s greatness.

Remember that events like the All-Star Game, Super Bowls, and Olympics are selected years in advance to give the host city and government enough time to prepare.

This year, though, such was not the case. The Mid-Summer Classic was supposed to be held in Atlanta this year, but Major League Baseball canceled the event only four months earlier due to new voter laws in Georgia. Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said that the league “fundamentally supports voting rights for all Americans and opposes ballot-box limitations.”

MLB said it selected Colorado because the city was already in the process of bidding to host an All-Star Game in the future and has comprehensive plans in place for hotel use, event space, and security.

If you’re already traveling to Denver, you likely have accommodations in place. If you’ve been able to score tickets on the resale market and are thinking of a spur of the moment trip, the city has some of the finest lodging in the country including a Four Seasons, Ritz Carlton, The Crawford, The Brown Palace Hotel & Spa, The Kimpton and more. Be aware, however, that Major League Baseball likely has the best hotels already locked up. You’ll have to do some research.

Denver has it all when it comes to cuisine, including an underappreciated barbecue culture highlighted by Roaming Buffalo, Boney’s, and Russell’s Smokehouse.

If you can get in, try the elegant dining of Blackbelly – helmed by ‘Top Chef’ winner Hosea Rosenberg – Basta, Frasca Food & Wine and some great Chinese at Hop Alley.

Is it art? Is it culture? Music? Please. The Denver Art Museum is one of the best in the nation, and the city is divided into seven distinct art districts. The Denver Museum of Nature and Science has some fantastic exhibits. Oh, and Red Rocks, one of the best outdoor amphitheater experiences in the world to watch a concert, is just a 25-minute drive away.

When the celebrations begin this week, there will, of course, be a plethora of baseball-related events. On Friday, July 9, Play Ball Park will open at the Colorado Convention Center. Fans will be able to take batting practice and softball, as well as bid on and purchase artifacts and receive autographs. There will also be a ‘MLB the Show’ gaming area, an MLB Network set, and lots of cuisine to sample from the league’s different stadiums.
