Here are our suggestions and advice on what to wear on a Mediterranean cruise and the many outfits you can create with them:

  • When planning your Mediterranean cruise outfits, look for comfortable, lightweight clothing that can be worn on long days of warm weather visits.
  • Put together your suit and cruise wardrobe with Mediterranean colors that complement each other. Easily create different outfits by putting on tops that match all your bottoms. In this article we have used blue, white and yellow, which fit perfectly with this beautiful Mediterranean background for your photos, but you can choose whatever you like.
  • Choose wrinkle-free fabrics for your Mediterranean cruise suit or bring a bottle of Downy to freshen up.
  • Choose items that can work during the day as well as in the evening. A simple sarafan dress is ideal for sightseeing on a beautiful day, but can also be worn in the evening with a light cardigan, kimono or pashmina and some jewelry. White jeans combined with a blouse, tunic or chiffon are ideal for casual evenings on board. You can also wear capri pants if it’s very hot, or linen pants if you prefer a looser fit.
  • Be aware of the places and activities you have planned in port and dress accordingly. Shorts and sleeveless tops are often banned in churches and museums in Europe. It’s a good idea to have a light scarf in your bag to cover your shoulders.
  • Comfortable shoes that you can walk around in all day are key! Our favourites are the Sketchers Go Walk sneakers – you can walk the streets of Europe all day with these, trust me! A pair of comfortable sandals is also necessary on days when it’s too hot or they can be worn on the boat in the evening. These Vionic sandals are an excellent choice. Aerosol sandals are another good option. These Croc Swiftwater sandals are very comfortable, lightweight, easy to store and can be worn around town, on the beach or on a boat trip because they are waterproof.

Seasonal changes in packaging of Mediterranean cruises

We have focused our list of Mediterranean cruises on a summer trip, as this is when most people choose to take a Mediterranean cruise. If you’re not travelling in the heart of summer, you’ll need a few extras, especially if you’re going to other parts of Europe where the climate is not as mild and reliable as on the Mediterranean (such as London, Amsterdam or Paris).

  • Summer in the Mediterranean ports is warm in the 80s and 90s (or late 20s and 30s) with lots of sunshine, just what you want on holiday! This luggage list is made for summer travel, with an emphasis on dresses, capri pants and breezy tops. A cardigan and leggings are enough to face the cold days and evenings, but also to stay comfortable during the flight.
  • Even in the spring and fall, you can expect warm and sunny days in the late 60s and late 70s (or 18-25°C) at the ports. It is advisable to bring jeans and one or two light sweaters for the cold days. Lightweight merino sweaters like these are perfect for this.
  • Winter temperatures range from 50 to 60°F (or 12 to 15°FC). You can layer dresses with leggings or tights and cardigans. Add a warmer jacket (great for wrapping up in) and a change of jeans, and replace sandals with flat, closed-toe or ankle boots.

Tourist visits and facilities

As you think about your Mediterranean cruise, think about what you will do in port. Attractions in cities like Barcelona, Rome and Santorini. You’ll need good shoes for the cobblestone streets. Light and comfortable dresses or blouses and capri pants. (If you don’t like capri pants, a light linen one will do as well). If you wear a sleeveless dress, add a light scarf when visiting churches or museums, as in Europe you often have to cover your shoulders when visiting important places. It’s always a good idea to bring a waterproof jacket (even in the summer), because you never know when you’ll need it. If you’re feeling chilly, you can always add leggings under the dress for an extra layer and a cardigan over it.

Occasional sea day suit

If you’re at sea during the day, just wear a more casual version of your outfit. T-shirts, blouses and shorts or dresses are all you need on the ship. It’s always a good idea to bring a pair of leggings with you for when you want to exercise, go on a boat ride, or just something to wear on cooler days or when you’re traveling.

Excursions to the beach or sailing

For the days by the pool and on the beach or in the sea you need good swimwear and protection. Pack two bags so you always have a dry swimsuit in case you want to go back to the beach or jump in the jacuzzi at night! These lightweight chiffon kimono tops are perfect for travel! You can wear them as a poolside cover-up or wear swim trunks and shorts on a beach day. They can also be used to wear a dress or a top and trousers to add colour to your outfit and protect your shoulders from the sun, or to go to church. Super convenient!

Casual evening wear

You don’t have to change for dinner, but many people do, especially after a sweaty day of visits! In the evening, you can wear summer dresses with sandals or wedges. You can even put a kimono over a dress or wear a pashmina on your shoulders. White jeans are ideal for cruises, as they can also be worn with a blouse for casual evenings. A vest can be very useful on cold nights.

Official Evening Dress

You’ll find that the formal evenings on Mediterranean cruises are much more relaxed than those on Caribbean cruises. After a busy weekday and visits to European cities, you might feel a little more discreet. And that’s fine! One or two simple sheath dresses and a pair of platform shoes or flat sandals will suffice for more formal evenings on a European cruise. A beautiful necklace, a pashmina and a red lipstick can do wonders to embellish such an outfit for the evening. Choose accessories that you can wear with both dresses if you have two.

We recommend printing out our packing list for a Mediterranean cruise, so you can get everything organized for the long journey ahead. Start by collecting the clothes in your closet that you think will work, then buy the parts you need to fill in the gaps. You can mark them on the list when you pick up items.

European cruises often last only a week, but some are longer, or you can travel to Europe before or after your cruise. When you consider what to bring for a two-week Mediterranean cruise rather than what to bring for a seven-day Mediterranean cruise, it is better to bring more than less. Remember, you can probably do your laundry on the ship if you prefer to pack on the lighter side, but you still have 7 or more days to travel. Here you can read our mail about packing the lights for the cruise.

Packing instructions for Europe

If you’re packing your bags for a Mediterranean cruise, you may also be planning to spend part of your trip in Europe. If you have travel plans before or after your cruise, here are a few tips for packing your luggage in Europe that may be helpful:

  • It is easier to travel in Europe with a smaller suitcase, so use the smallest and lightest luggage you can get. Hotel rooms, elevators and taxis can be small in Europe, so large bags are not ideal. Your hotel may not even have an elevator, and train stations often don’t have elevators to get from one platform to another.
  • If you want to check in a larger bag, we recommend a 25-inch suitcase, like these, as they are still convenient, but larger than a carry-on.
  • European airlines have strict weight restrictions on suitcases, so check them before you fly. You can only bring 10 kg (22 pounds) and some allow only 7 kg (15 pounds).
  • Choose a suitcase with four wheels, as they are much easier to maneuver in airports, train stations and around town.
  • Use the packing cubes to organize your luggage more efficiently.
  • A backpack or backpack with a shoulder strap and RFID compartments is essential for Europe.
  • Don’t carry all your credit cards, debit cards and cash in one place. When sightseeing, only bring a credit card and some cash. Store the rest in your hotel room safely in the trunk, preferably with a luggage lock.
  • A small collapsible laundry bag and a few travel sheets like this are perfect for travel in Europe and will help you pack more easily.
